One of its claims to fame was the large Vista Dome clear glass top that allowed its passengers to view the scenery all around them. The route began in Chicago Illinois and ended in Emeryville CA. The train made its first run on March 19 1949 and while the original train stopped in 1970 it has since been operated by Amtrak. At 2438 miles it is one of Amtrak's longest routes and is to this day one of the most scenic - with breathtaking views of the Upper Colorado River Valley in the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada.
