1961224201961. U.S. Naval Missile Center Authors and Editors Handbook 1961 establishes standardized authorship formatting and editorial control for technical reports produced at the Pacific Missile Range documenting the internal communication systems that supported U.S. guided missile and early satellite programs during the Cold War. Issued for personnel at Point Mugu California the manual defines procedures for drafting reviewing and disseminating classified and technical material tied to weapons development providing direct evidence of how military knowledge was structured codified and circulated within federal defense infrastructure. The inclusion of a contemporaneous typescript insert History of the Pacific Missile Range February 1961 further situates the handbook within active missile testing and space recovery operations supporting research into Cold War science military bureaucracy and the integration of documentation practices into weapons development.

Pacific Missile Range and U.S. Naval Missile Center. Authors and Editors Handbook. Point Mugu CA: U.S. Naval Missile Center 1 August 1961. First edition. Publication No. NMC-MP-61-9. Quarto format 218 pages with an additional 5-page typescript insert titled History of the Pacific Missile Range February 1961 issued by the Public Affairs Office. Three-hole-punched sheets bound with cloth tape and printed card wrappers. The handbook is organized into four sections: Report Preparation Manuscript Preparation Language Grammar and Punctuation and Matters of Style outlining requirements for technical clarity typographic consistency and standardized formatting across naval missile documentation. The inserted historical report traces the establishment of the Pacific Missile Range in 1957 under William Holaday and details its expansion into "an ocean-spanning instrumented network capable of supplying information on the launching guidance and impact of the nation's largest missiles and satellites." Documented events include "On 16 Dec 1958 the first REGULUS II missile was fired" and the recovery of "DISCOVERER XIII. making it the first man-made object ever recovered from orbit" providing a contemporaneous record of early U.S. missile and satellite operations.

Produced during a period of rapid expansion in U.S. missile testing and space reconnaissance the manual demonstrates how technical writing standards were integrated into military systems to ensure uniformity precision and reliability in the production of strategic knowledge. References to parallel guides such as Guide for Air Force Writing and Preparation of Weapon-Test Reports indicate alignment across branches of the armed services in codifying technical communication. The Pacific Missile Range functioned as a central node in Cold War weapons testing linking launch sites tracking stations and recovery operations across the Pacific and the documentation practices outlined here formed part of the operational infrastructure supporting those activities. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. Significant for its early account of biodiversity in the now protected "Coral Triangle" of the Pacific, Cheesman's succinct and well illustrated primary source reveals highlights of an entire year of entomological research on little-known islands of the Pacific, just north of the Dampier Strait, in Papua New Guinea, on behalf of the Natural History division of the British Museum. The splendid coral reefs of Mayalibit Bay, limestone mountains and formations, a wealth of exotic vegetation, mangrove swamps, fauna and reptilia are but a few features examined. On the volcanic Mount Nok she set up camp, where she interacted with native inhabitants of small villages, remarking on their language, education, and on previous feuds with "Bush Tribes.' On Japen island she first establishes camp on Mt. Baduri, from where she collects samples and observes birds. before relocating to two other locations. In the tropical forests for six months, many samples were acquired, and a remarkable storm was documented.

Michael Terry, known as "The Last of the Australian Explorers" was an explorer and gold prospector, and the leader of fourteen inland Australia expeditions between 1923 and 1935, mainly working for Adelaide mining companies seeking minerals. This is a succinct account of his prospecting expedition to the Petermann and Tomkinson Ranges in Central Austraila, in which he traversed approximately 3000 miles in the lands west of the Overland Telegraph Line in search of useful minerals including gold. Terry did not find any significant mineral, but found great quality pastoral land in and adjacent to the Tomkinson, Mann, and western portion of the Musgrave Ranges.

The large first album opens with many photos following a trip to Yosemite National Park as well as scenes along the route and upon the return of Walter & Julia. Their follow-up automobile trip in 1928 takes them to Yellowstone National Park via Spokane Idaho and Montana with photos included of Old Faithful a photo by Haynes of the Grand Geyser as well as auto camping at “Mammoth Hot Springs.†Subsequent photos trace their travels through the Columbia River Gorge the Snake River Mount Rainier National Park Ariel Dam near Ariel WA Hoods Canal WA and Newport OR. Their speed boat launch the Carmen is featured in some photos along with several views of pumps hoisting engines giant diesel and gas engines under repair. Other trips include those to Snoqualmie Falls Trout Lake WA near Mt. A couple photos within the two albums show early motorcycles and even gallivanting on some stripped down chassis without engines or tires. The second album includes a series of photos featuring Walter and his car beneath a towering Cedar Stump with arch cut into the base and him holding gun as well as standing on the fenders of the car. The second also includes automobile camping photos with tent and cots folded out of the rear of the automobile driving into Vancouver B.C. as well as driving to Mount Rainier and more along the Columbia River Highway and Mount Hood. Also featured are hunting shots in Eastern Oregon construction of a summer log cabin and much more. Mackay 1883-1959 was a mechanical engineer machinist gearhead racecar builder who came West working for the railroad as a machinist before working for Paragon Co. in Seattle as parts manager. He owned and operated the MacKay Automotive Repair at 165 E. 39th in Portland OR on the SW corner of 39th Cesar Chavez and Belmont for years before working at Albina Engine & Machine Works at the end of the Great Depression. One of the photos in the 2nd album shows MacKay with his camera shooting a photo and several show Julia MacKay’s 1880-1958 sisters and family. 192175088St. Paul: Northern Pacific Railway Company 1921-1930. First edition. Ten consecutive issues. Folio 12 x 9 inches. Variously paginated. Many charts but no illustrations. All but the Twenty-seventh and the Thirty-fourth Reports have large folding maps bound in at rear of report. Original printed wrappers and all bound together in a stabbed-and-sewn black cloth binder. Very good. The Northern Pacific Railway reporting mark NP was a transcontinental railroad that operated across the northern tier of the western United States from Minnesota to the Pacific Northwest. It was approved by Congress in 1864 and given nearly forty million acres 62000 sq mi; 160000 km2 of land grants which it used to raise money in Europe for construction. Construction began in 1870 and the main line opened all the way from the Great Lakes to the Pacific when former President Ulysses S. Grant drove in the final "golden spike" in western Montana on September 8 1883. The railroad had about 6800 miles 10900 km of track and served a large area including extensive trackage in the states of Idaho Minnesota Montana North Dakota Oregon Washington and Wisconsin. In addition the NP had an international branch to Winnipeg Manitoba Canada. The main activities were shipping wheat and other farm products cattle timber and minerals; bringing in consumer goods transporting passengers; and selling land. The Northern Pacific merged with other lines in 1970 to form the Burlington Northern Railroad which in turn merged with the Santa Fe to become the BNSF Railway in 1996. The main interest here is in the very detailed maps. Northern Pacific Railway Company hardcover
