Ferdinand Marie, Vicomte de Lesseps (1805-1894) was the French developer of the Suez Canal, which joined the Mediterranean and Red Seas in 1869, and substantially sailing distances and times between the West and the East. He attempted to repeat this success with an effort to build a sea-level Panama Canal during the 1880s, but the project was devastated by epidemics of malaria and yellow fever in the area, and the projected de Lesseps canal was left uncompleted and eventually partially superseded by a non-sea-level canal with locks, built by the United States and completed in 1914. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! "L'opuscule reproduit le discours lu par Ferdinand de Lesseps le 2 juin 1879, où il plaide en faveur de l'exécution de son projet de construction du canal interocéanique au Panama, et du lancement d'un appel national de capitaux s'élevant à 400 milions de francs. Lesseps évoque les études faites par Wyse et Reclus, lieutenants de vaisseau, et Celler, ingénieur en chef des Ponts et Chaussées, ainsi que plusieurs autres ingénieurs étrangers envoyés par une société d'études française.Il parle enfin de la seconde exploration de Wyse et Reclus et de leur projet, "parfaitement étudié" qui fixe le tracé du canal entre Colon-Aspinwal et Panama en suivant le tracé du chemin de fer sur une ligne de 73 km."
