ill., ril. Con Hokusai, Utamaro e Kuniyoshi, Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) è uno dei grandi protagonisti dell'ukiyoe. Rispetto a Hokusai, con cui si confronta continuamente avendo una trentina d'anni di meno, Hiroshige riesce a portare il paesaggio e la natura al centro della sua opera donando all'osservatore quel senso di armonia, serenità e calma che ancora oggi tutti apprezzano e per le cui qualità spesso è maggiormente apprezzato e considerato il "maestro della natura". Hiroshige infatti tratta la figura umana con segni veloci, spediti che talvolta ricordano ai nostri occhi i bozzetti dei manga o delle animazioni (anime), semplificati ed essenziali. Pubblicata in occasione della mostra romana, la monografia presenta una selezione di circa 230 opere dalle più importanti serie di Hiroshige comprendenti vedute di luoghi celebri della capitale Edo così come delle province più lontane, ma anche un corpus di immagini di animali, fiori e insetti tra le più ammirate, oltre a disegni originali e matrici di stampa ancora intatte. La monografia, che traccia l'intero percorso artistico del maestro giapponese, è suddivisa in otto sezioni tematiche all'interno delle quali si affrontano le singole serie più significative in modo esemplificativo ed esaustivo: Le prime opere; Immagini di viaggio; Fiori, uccelli e luna; Vedute di luoghi lontani; Vedute della Capitale Orientale; Hiroshige: vita e opere; Hiroshige e la sua grafica: contemporanei e Occidente.
