RARE monograph on the nature and pace of grammatical change during the formative period of today's Indo-Aryan languages, with emphasis on the emergence and development of the ergative construction in terms of the passive-to-ergative reanalysis and the co-existence of the ergative construction with the old and new analytic passive constructions. Based on a wealth of new data gathered from original poetic works in Apabhramsa (by Svayaṃbhadeva, Puspadanta, Haribhadra, Somaprabha et al.), it also contains sections dealing with descriptive techniques of Medieval Indian grammarians (esp. Folio, Second and Best Edition, with 5 very large folding coloured maps, 5 large folding plans, 40 photographic plates on 20, and164 illustrations (a number full-page) in the text, half-title very lightly spotted, some very light and occasional marginal spotting to text; original black cloth, upper board blocked and lettered in blind, gilt back, very neatly rebacked in cloth to style, small faded patch on upper board else a very good, bright, clean copy. With 4pp of illustrated industrial advertisements at end. Greatly expanded and updated version of the first edition ['Irrigation Works in India and Egypt'] of 1893. All unsold copies were destroyed by fire at the publishers and it was consequently unavailable by December 1903. The original book also included descriptions of the Irrigation Works of Egypt; these are almost entirely omitted here since Works in India had increased substantially and required greater coverage. A very good, clean copy of the standard reference of the period. VERY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION.

Buhler's classic study was first published in the German language in 1898; the first English translation (prepared by Fleet) appeared in 1904 as an appendix in 'Indian Antiquary'. There the situation rested for over fifty years until the work was reissued in 'Indian Studies' in 1959, when for the first time the separately printed portfolio of plates and transliteration tables appeared with English captions. This edition was rapidly exhausted and thus the present reissue was produced. This reissue provides a verbatim reproduction of the 1959 edition, together with Max-Muller's Obituary Note on Buhler originally published in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1898, and Fleet's Introductory Notes to the text as published in 1904 Sadly the rare separate portfolio is not present with this copy, which is quite sufficiently elusive in its own right.
