The translator, Claude Francois Bergier (1721-1784) , was a French Jurist, writer, and English translator (including Fergusons Essay on Civil Society) . An Apology for Spinoza and Spinozism, contains Lettre à M. Helvetius dated 15 juillet 1766: pages [125]-136 (Letter to Helvetius in the 1810 edition, absent from the 122 page Altona 1805 edition) . In-8°, legatura coeva in mezza pelle con titoli e fregi in oro al dorso, pp. (6)375(1). Con 32 bellissime tavole litografiche che raffigurano usi e costumi (Fete de la Lune à Ceylan, Les bonds du Gange, Chasse aux éléphants dans la foret de Karnigal) e vedute di Delhi, Madras, Ceylon, Calcutta, Lahore, l'Himalaya. Le litografie sono di Cupper, de Rudder, Gerlier, Lehnert, Robineau e Walter. Cinque delle tavole - quelle impresse da Auguste Bry sono brunite; le altre sono stampate da Lemercier. Alla fine una carta geografica a colori con gli itinerarii dei viaggi (1841-1943 e 1845-1846). Rara prima edizione dei 'Voyages dans l'Inde', opera che avrà più edizioni in francese (con 36 tavole) e in russo. Timbretti di vecchia appartenenza privata al frontespizio e al verso di alcune tavole; leggere rare bruniture, a qualche leggero aloncino ai margini di alcune tavole. Buon esemplare.
In 16° (cm 11,7 x 19,3), legatura piena pelle marmoreggiata coeva, titolo su tassello, fregi in oro al dorso, pp VIII, 184, impresa (di Barthélémy Chirol ad istanza di Gabriel Cramer) al frontespizio. Esemplare in buone condizioni. Destinati a porre rimedio all'ingiustizia dell'esecuzione del generale Lally, i "Fragments" apparvero, nella prima versione di XX Articoli, verso la fine del mese di luglio 1773. Questa prima edizione di Ginevra, impressa da Barhélémy Chirol su richiesta di Gabriel Cramer, fu seguita da vicino dall'edizione di Parigi e da una edizione pirata di Londra. Nell'edizione delle "Oeuvres complètes" di Kehl, il testo volterriano fu radicalmente alterato su autorizzazione di Condorcet, che implicato nell'"affaire Lally", volle "rettificare" gli "errori" di Voltaire. Come nell'"affaire Calas", Voltaire prese le difese di un individuo accusato ingiustamente, uscendo alla fine vittorioso dal confronto con il potere giudiziario. La critica volterriana della giustizia francese nell'opera, è la stessa che V. scaglia dai tempi del suo "Commentaire sur le livre Des délits et des peines de Beccaria": processi segreti, giudizi vaghi, codice di leggi fatto apposta per precisare i delitti inesistenti. Inoltre V. approfitta del teatro della guerra in India per colmare la sua curiosità sulle civiltà orientali, soprattutto in vista della campagnacontro la religione giudeo-cristiana. L'India è secondo lui la più antica civiltà, ed è sintesi della grandezza e insieme del ridicolo della specie umana. Esemplari censiti in COPAC.

Note that though these are consecutive they are marked as Volumes 1, 2, and 6. Includes a 1934 article titled, The Holocaust in Germany, " an EXTREMELY early use of this term to describe the growing attacks on the Jews of Germany by the Nazis. This rare run of the first three years of Bombays first Zionist periodical is inscribed by Joseph Sargon, who worked as managing editor of the Jewish Tribune during the publication of these issues. Born and educated in Bombay, Mr. Sargon came to the United States in 1939 (land lived in Brookline) after serving as managing editor of the Bombay Jewish Tribune for 13 years. During his world travels, he interviewed and wrote articles about Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru and other figures. (Boston Globe, 1990) The Bombay Tribune was established by the nephews of Nissim Elias Benjamin Ezra. N. E. B. Ezra, was a Baghdadi Jewish publisher and Zionist based in Shanghai. He founded the Shanghai Zionist Association in 1903 and its official newspaper, Israel's Messenger, one of China's oldest and most sophisticated Jewish periodicals Influenced by Ezra, his nephews started the newspaper Jewish Tribune in Bombay, India. (Wikipeida, 2017) These 36 issues of the Tribune include the 1st appearance of many articles and editorials from some of the leading Jewish thinkers from across the world including: NEB Ezra, Bernard S. Deutsch, Rabbi Julius J. Price, Haham Moses Gaster, Emanuel Neumann, Israel Cohen, Khan Bahadur Jackson B. Israel, Jl Magnes, Samuel Magnus, David Sassoon, Rabbi Leo Jung, Jl Landau, Rabbi Schlesinger, Laszlo Schwartz, Louis Golding, Jh Hertz (Then Chief Rabbi Of British Empire) , Jacob De Haas, Rabbi D. De Sola Pool, Edward Jacobs, Mrs. Israel Davidson, Lily Tobias, H. Pereira Mendez, Rabbi Benjamin Ouziel, and Cyrus Adler. Includes a few early reporting articles about Nazi Anti-Semitism, early reporting on the 1934 Nepal-Bihar Earthquake, and a few articles about Mahatma Gandhi, among other topics of Jewish and Zionist interest.
