Ma è necessario comprendere che la tipica espressione di una immagine sattvica è un'espressione di serenità e rappresenta un ben definito ideale di carattere. Da un lato dobbiamo evitare di confondere l'apatia con la pace e dall'altro di confondere l'eccitazione con il potere. Moltissime delle emozioni a cui reagiscono ordinariamente gli uomini hanno un carattere che i retorici indiani chiamano transitorio: è l'emozione permanente (sth?yibh?va), la passione dominante di un Bodhisattva, che l'artista indiano è interessato a rappresentare, più che non i lineamenti distorti sotto la spinta del sentimento personale. Solo nelle moderne figure di terracotta di Lucknow l'artista lavora secondo lo stile del Laocoonte. Si comprenderà come in India le immagini religiose non siano mai state considerate come opere d'arte. Esse sono oggetti utili, fabbricati dagli artigiani a cui vien fatta richiesta di una chiara e ripetuta rappresentazione di una data forma avente un significato ben noto. [...] Nell'arte indiana, ogni forma è il simbolo di un pensiero chiaro e consapevole e di un sentimento consapevolmente diretto. Nulla è arbitrario o peculiare, nulla è vago o misterioso, perché la vera raison d'être di tutte le immagini è di rappresentare idee concrete in forme comprensibili e facili da apprendere».
