An unusual 18th century letter by a widow in Jamaica seeking assistance for her son from her dead husband's brother. Written in somewhat halting English she writes in part: "I beg Leave to acquant sic you. I was the Widdow of your Bother Mr. Chas. Amos who died the 7 of September 1763 and left me with two children a Daughter named Jane Born December the 3 1758 and a Son Born April 18 1762. The girl I have since had the misfortune to loose. The boy named George is still liveing and was yesterday 11 years of age and is I thank God in good health . The reason of my troubling you now is about 18 months agoe my sister myself not being in town had an applycation made to her by Mr. William Bullock in consequence of a letter he had just recd from on Mr. Campble who to to Mr. Bullock by the desire of the Reverend Mr. Spicer to enquire after me and my children and to acquaint me that he had some Hundred pounds in his possession which belongd to my child in rite of his grandfather . I had some thoughts of carrying him to England myself for his education which cannot be well done in this part of the world where we are badly off for proper schools . Since Mr. Amos death I again married Mr. Jacobi who likewise I have been unhappy enough to loose and am at this time under some embarresment with his affairs . unknown books

14751Duckenfield Hall Estate letter: On Hankey's letterhead of 7 Mincing Lane London EC; 29 December 1915. Meylersfield and Friendship Estates letter: no place; dated 26 June 1917. The two items are in very good condition on lightly-aged paper. Accompanying the two items is the envelope in which they were contained docketted: 'Letters. Duckinfield sic Hall Estate Meylersfield Estate & Friendship Estate Trust'. Both items are signed 'Cyril Gurney H. A. Trotter L. M. Harvey'. ONE Duckenfield Hall Estate letter: 1p. 4to. Begins: 'Owing to the value of Duckenfield Hall Estate being largely in excess of £6000 the sum at which it stands in the firm's books it is agreed between us that in the event of the death of a partner his executors shall receive a share of the surplus profits after ten per cent has been paid on £6000.' The letter continues on the topic of the action to be taken 'in the event of the estate being sold'. A descendant of the English judge Sir John Gurney 1768-1845 and a member of a prominent abolitionist family Cyril Gurney had married Margaret Evelyn Trotter in 1894. TWO: 1p. foolscap 8vo. Setting out what is to be done with 'any profit or surplus arising from the sale of Meylersfield Estate or from the trust in connection with he winding up of Friendship Estate.' The letter begins: 'Gentlemen I am directed to inform you that a Bill of Exchange drawn by His Excellency the Governor and the Members of the Executive Committee on the Lords of the Treasury for the sum of £10.822 . 9 . 6 at thirty days' sight will be forwarded to you by the Receiver General by the present Mail together with Bills of the Colonial Bank making with the Bills already forwarded the further sum of £9.500 - and to provide altogether the sum of £20.000 which I am to instruct you to receive and pay to the Bank of England in liquidation of that amount payable there on the 1st April next for Interest and Sinking Fund on the Jamaica Guaranteed Loan.' Clarke" and recipient of letter on p.4 a small part of which is stuck to p.2 separated from the other docketing. Text clear and complete. A mysterious further note appears above the letter text "Entd. OB 236". He says: The bearer George one of my Servants is so much grown that he cannot wear his Blue Livery Coat and Red Waistcoat. You must therefore let them former elided sufficiently in the Body & Sleeves; and lengthen the latter at the Cuffs to make them long enough - Pray do this in the best manner you can and as soon as possible." Nugent is delighted to learn of Wallich's 'appointment to the Superintendence of the Botanical Gardens at Calcutta' and is pleased that the post has made Wallich independent: 'I give myself Credit for having confirmed you in the Situation for it was highly favorable to the Company's Interests & I believe the Directors are sensible of it . What a Pleasure it must be to you to see alll your children provided for in such honorable Employment - It is a just Reward for all your Labours & you are fortunate in having adopted England as your Country where you can attend to their Interests'. He thanks him for sending a newspaper 'which reminds me of old Times though I have no longer any Tie in India'. He ends by offering to return any of the documents Wallich has sent him.
