A "mad scientist" induces a young Irish girl to take experimental drugs which causes her to fall into a deep coma or die and come back tot life depending on your viewpoint. Wright AMERICAN FICTION lists this at no. 1304 but Sabin no. 33833 lists it more historically. Hungerford was born on "The Old Plantation" in Calvert County Maryland in 1814. He later became the editor and publisher of "The Southern Home Journal" a weekly in Baltimore. This novel "is a thinly veiled story of a murder in the family of a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and is interspersed with many short stories including quite a collection of ghost stories." Chapter XIV is " 'Colored' Characters ". Chapter XVI " Mesbach " covers Negro Superstitions The African Prince. Chapter XIX has Negro Nick-names. Chapters XXI-XXV are St. Joseph's Ghost-Stories.
