2020BIBHB0210198192020. Hardcover. New. About the Book :- Through this rare work the author has tried to portray the unknown classic of geography surveying and adventure. He worked for the British government in India as a soldier and surveyor in fact one of the primary geographers who helped create the modern borders of Pakistan and Afghanistan. His book-- which discusses more than a decade of exploration in Afghanistan in and around 1890-- is a fascinating account of early European contact with Afghanistan and is pertinent for today. Surprisingly little has changed: jihads rough frontier warfare civil unrest foreign intervention--today the ugly American--and incredible hardship in one of the toughest places on this planet--the frontier of Pakistan and Afghanistan. At the time the British Empire forces in India wanted to create a definite border between their India and the wilds of Afghanistan--partly because of their fear of Russian incursions into the region. It contains 22 illustrations and a map. The book is good for common readers. About the Author:- Colonel Sir Thomas Hungerford Holdich KCMG KCIE CB FRGS was an English geographer and president of the Royal Geographical Society. He is best known as Superintendent of Frontier Surveys in British India and author of numerous books including The Gates of India The Countries of the King's Award and Political Frontiers and Boundary Making. During peacetime he was largely occupied with the survey of India and served on the Afghan Boundary Commission of 188486 the Tasmar Boundary Commission of 1894 the Pamir Boundary Commission of 1895 and the Perso-Baluchistan Boundary Commission of 1896.
