Pagination runs 3-12 with a fold out supplement page in the rear. Text complete. A short work discussing the upcoming construction of the Hennepin Canal suggesting that the eastern terminus at the Illinois River to be constructed first with the terminus in the Mississippi River to be selected after consideration of surveys. The Hennepin Canal was originally conceived of in the 1830s as a way to connect the Illinois River to the Mississippi River enabling a greater trade in commerce through more transportation options. Politics war and other obstacles delayed its construction until the 1890s. Completed in 1907 it operated in limited capacity until the early 1950s. After shutting down it eventually became a recreational area. GOOD condition. General toning. Minor soiling. Small tear at the lower fore edge. Some creasing and wrinkling. No publisher unknown

Small folios. 664 680 738 pp. All illustrations present as called for although a map from volume 3 is misbound in volume one with a few other portraits misbound or DETACHED and laid in. A reprint of this work originally published under the title "The War with the South" and issued in parts. This edition continued and finished by Benjamin Smith. A general history of the Civil War looking at the various battles campaigns notable figures etc. GOOD condition. A few illustrations detached but present. Heavy scuffing to the leather along the extremities and spine with general fading and otherwise minor scuffing to the covers. Minor soiling and staining to the covers. This includes mention of battles at Richmond Fort Donelson and elsewhere; the call up of 750000 men then 300000 men and the fear among the "young" presumably about being called up; the firing of McClellan; a note reading "report of McClellan retreating doubtful true" yellow fever in New Orleans etc. The writer also lists a few deaths storm damage fires the commencement of haying etc. No owner's name present. 1911021486East Aurora NY: The Roycrofters 1911. First Edition. Quarter Leather. Very Good. Paper covered boards with a leather spine. 130 pp. SIGNED with a lengthy inscription by Marilla Ricker on the first endpaper. The inscription reads in part "So far as I've heard no Christian has arisen to state that the morals of the Rev. Clarence Richeson were contaminated by reading the works of Paine or Ingersoll. The Rev. claims to be a product of the Christian bible and he's still talking of his god and his bible." Ricker is referring to Clarence Richeson an on and off again minister for a variety of congregations who apparently suffered many bouts of insanity and was hospitalized several times. He also was engaged to many young women sometimes several at once. In 1911 he poisoned and murdered Avis Linnell and was sentenced to death. He was executed in early 1912. Given that the reverend was alive until early 1912 it is possible this was inscribed sometime in late 1911. A collection of four essays on four figures in history: Robert G. Ingersoll Thomas Paine John Calvin and Jonathan Edwards as well as an essay asking "What is Prayer" Ricker reflects on Robert G. Ingersoll his agnosticism and skill as an orator as well as his advocacy for freethought and questions Theodore Roosevelt's criticisms of Thomas Paine among other subjects. Marilla M. Ricker was the first woman admitted to the NH bar as well as being admitted to the bar in Washington DC in 1882. She pushed for prison reform and worked free of charge for many of her clients. Ricker was also a strong advocate for women's suffrage being the first woman to attempt to vote in New Hampshire arguing that she had a right to do so as a property owner in Dover NH. She also was a key figure in the freethought movement. VERY GOOD condition. Minor soiling and edgewear to the covers. Leather rather scuffed along the hinges. Minor toning in the interior. Hicks and his troupe the Georgia Minstrels. Hicks was an African-American performer and minstrel troupe manager and publicist being one of the few to be successful in the white dominated genre. Top of the cover dedicates this "To Charles B. Hicks." The cover itself is a lithograph by John H. Bufford drawing on stereotypes and idealizations of what the white US public imagined Black life to be like using imagery to portray an older Black gentleman theoretically reflecting wistfully back on life in slavery. A promotional work featuring famed topless dancer Carol Doda and her work at the Condor nightclub in San Francisco. Four panels feature reproduced press clippings from 1965 about Doda's show with the other four panels primarily featuring photographs of Carol Doda performing. One photo depicts the Condor's owners. Carol Doda popularized topless dancing in clubs being one of the first noted performers to do so. She started her topless act in 1964. In 1969 she changed her act to be entirely nude which she performed until it was outlawed in 1972. The Condor was opened in 1958 but became most popular once it started featuring Doda's topless act. It was added to the San Francisco Business Legacy in 2022 recognized in part for pioneering topless and bottomless entertainment. GOOD condition. This includes a lengthy account of the day of the killing including quotes from Robert Bob Ford the wife of Jesse James and some background into the plot of the killing. Also in this issue is a short paragraph on Dick Liddle a member of the James Gang and his testimony as to robberies committed by the gang; and a lengthy account of the Blue Cut Train Robbery by John Land recalling the actions of the James Gang. Various items of news and commentary present including the suicide of Cornelius Vanderbilt and the hanging of an African-American in Virginia Doc Wright who apparently murdered Coleman Arthur and who was suspected of being part of a secret society called "The True Friends." With a 2 by 4 inch Federal Eagle illustration on the title page in which the eagle clutches a branch in one talon and a group of arrows in the other as well as carrying a banner in its beak with the slogan E Plurbus Unum. Black and white photos throughout as well as one apparent painted photo by Karl Moon. Single issue of this monthly magazine this one relying heavily on photographs. Of note are a series of 14 Photographs by Carl moon an American photographer perhaps best known for his photographs of Native Americans. These photos depict Native Americans living in the Taos New Mexico area and are reminiscent of the work by Edward Curtis. While some critics have acclaimed his work for its documentation of Native American life the work seems to mythologize the false concept of the disappearance of Native Americans in the US. The article concludes "we are loath to confess that in the final count it is best that man's progress in the cultivation of land should be unchecked and our reluctance lies in the fact that this change must toll the knell of the Redman's sic day." Among the other photos in the book are photos of celebrities and of the Hudson-Fulton celebration in New York. Included in these photos is one depicting Wilbur Wright flying over Governor's Island in New York. His flight that day included the first over water and the canoe that he mounted underneath the airplane as a precaution against a water landing can be seen in the photo. FAIR condition. Frontispiece illustration haphazardly cut out of the magazine. Very heavy scuffing chipping creasing tearing and loss to the covers along the extremities with most of the spine missing. Some creasing soiling and staining to the covers with superficial paper loss to the rear cover. Large faint pencil circle present to the front cover.
