First Edition, 30, [2]pp., text slightly foxed towards the end, disbound. Judge Jeremie was appointed Attorney-General in Mauritius and arrived from England in 1832 to announce abolition without indemnity to a hostile reception of sugar planters and slave owners. Slavery was finally abolished in 1835 but not before the owners received ?2,000,000 compensation from the British. After accusing Mauritian judges of involvement in slavery, Sir John Jeremie was honoured in 1836 by the Anti-Slavery Society.

Nel momento in cui la questione ecologica ha assunto un'urgenza e una centralità indiscutibili, diventa essenziale fornirne un'inquadratura filosofica, che permetta di dare un significato-più univoco e coerente al concetto di ecologia, ben oltre il suo carattere meramente scientifico. Per converso, il riconoscimento della centralità di questo tema ha degli effetti dirompenti sullo statuto della filosofia, poiché comporta mettere in questione l'impianto categoriale e le forme di vita (anche in senso politico e sociale) della modernità nel suo complesso, ma anche sottoporre a critica i filoni dominanti di una millenaria tradizione occidentale. In questa direzione va la proposta di un nuovo paradigma del corpo, che ha in Maurice Merleau-Ponty, filosofo della corporeità e della natura, il suo punto di riferimento fondamentale, e che sì contrappone a quel paradigma ermeneutico, a quel predominio del linguaggio che ha egemonizzato la filosofia del Novecento, fino al poststrutturalismo e al postmoderno. In questo quadro, si abbozza la riformulazione, entro il nuovo paradigma, di alcune delle questioni fondamentali della tradizione filosofica: la natura, il soggetto, il lavoro, la tecnica, la libertà.
