SKU1027887Acceptable. Although finely bound with marbled boards and gilt lettering on spine this volume is missing its title page. Because it contains two-volumes in one it is unlikely to be the 1853 edition in four volumes published by Longman et al in London although it is almost certain it is a new printing of the work edited by Maurice Cross. A penciled note on upper margin of front end page reveals it was read in 1890. The former owner's address label on paste down gives no date.486 p. foxed and occasionally stained not damp stains with occasional discreet notations in pencil in margins. Binding firm; boards quite scuffed. spine and corners reinforced with brown cloth perhaps replacing leather during former repair. Raised bands. hardcover
