As called for, there are three impressions of this woodcut, on Rives, Japan, and Chine. Denis engraved these woodcuts from 1889 and 1893, and they are extremely important and beautiful images. This copy, exceptionally, has a separate suite of the 13 lithographs on extremely fine Auvergne handmade wove paper. The double-page lithographs in the suite, obviously, have never been folded, unlike the ones in the book. Only 40 of these suites were printed (16 on Japanese paper, 24 on Auvergne paper). AN EXCEPTIONAL COPY OF A BEAUTIFUL BOOK. Illustrated with 15 fine full-page hors-texte copper engravings by Maurice Leroy and dozens of wood-engravings (initials, headpieces, and tailpieces) by Dan Sigros (the initials are printed in two colors). Leroy is perhaps the most underestimated book artist of the 20th century, and this book is his masterpiece: the copper engravings are technically complex and perfectly executed. Sigros' wood-engravings all depict the Devil, in extremely varied and imaginative ways. From an edition of 618 numbered copies, this is one of 475 beautifully printed on fine wove paper. THIS IS ONE OF VERY FEW COPIES (perhaps as few as five) WITH ALL OF LEROY'S ENGRAVINGS BEAUTIFULLY ILLUMINATED BY HAND. Large 4to. Loose as issued in original wraps. FINE AND BRIGHT. Bouton, Sect. to the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences.", 2 folding lithograph plates at end of Mr. Carie's pump, 99, [1], xxiv, 100-187, xxv-lxx1, [1] pp., contemporary red morocco, gilt, hinges slightly rubbed, the upper cover with presentation inscription in gilt, with the armorial bookplate of Sir James Gomer Berry, a nice copy. Field Marshall Sir William M. Gomm was Governor of Mauritius, 1842-49. The text which is part in French and part in English includes a letter from the Hon. Mr. G. C. Cuninghame on the Dodo being on the islands of Mauritius, Bourbon, and Rodrigues, about 200 years previously (pp.91-93), and a fascinating discussion on how people and boats could have reached Madagascar from the Malays, with further interesting comments on the Malayan language (pp.136-148). Other interesting topics include the cultivation of canes at Bourbon Island, a new mode of preserving and cutting canes, the diseases of canes, preservation of the roots of the manioc, and electricity applied to the growth of plants.

The set also carries the fine nineteenth century engraved armorial bookplate of Sir Andrew Noble of Ardmore and Ardardan on front paste-downs. The Trollope Society records that the author's sixth novel was written 'mainly in railway carriages, since his work for the Post Office entailed a good deal of travelling'. The story is drawn from his memories of his work as a clerk at the GPO in St Martin-le-Grand, and Richard Mullen has called it the most autobiographical of Trollope's novels.
