Collating x 181 1 printer's imprint 1 publisher's device 1 blank and including twenty mounted color plates including frontispiece.<br/><br/>Belgian poetic dramatist and essayist Maurice Maeterlinck 1862-1949 "wrote in French establishing himself as one of the leading figures in the symbolist movement with his play La Princesse Maleine 1889; English trans. 1892. In 1892 Pelléas et Mélisande appeared trans. 1894 the work for which he is now chiefly remembered and the source of Debussy's opera of the same name 1902. He also achieved great contemporary popularity with L'Oiseau bleu 1908; The Blue Bird 1909 and was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1911. He drew heavily on traditions of romance and fairy tale and the characteristic tone of much of his drama is one of doom-laden mystery and timeless melancholy. He also produced a number of essays of a philosophical nature including La Vie des abeilles 1901; The Life of the Bee 1901 and L'Intelligence des fleurs 1907; The Intelligence of Flowers 1907" OCEL. <br/><br/>It was fitting for the illustrator to take up this work. After the tragic death of his twin brother and collaborator Edward Detmold concentrated his talents on books primarily of flowers and animals: "Detmold's finest plates are those produced for The Fables of Aesop 1909 The Life of the Bee 1911 and Hours of Gladness 1912 the latter with texts after Maurice Maeterlinck the Belgian poet naturalist and mystic.A painting of chrysanthemums contained in Hours of Gladness is a glorious acknowledgement of the artist's debt to William Morris and Burne-Jones" Larkin.<br/><br/>Houfe 283. We are pleased to offer the original artwork for the front cover of the book "Ancestors of Bantan" by Maurice B. Gardner. The artist is David Prosser signed "Prosser '75" lower left. Offered here with the original black and white format. for publication the title and surrounding portions of the cover image and artist name were colored red. Artist reworks etc are clear to the naked eye.<br/><br/>Dimensions of the frame are 17 3/4 inches wide by 25 inches high with the original art extending almost to the margins. Not examined out of frame but in nice condition with a few spots observed. The related Bantan book was published by Theo. Gaus' Sons Brooklyn NY in 1976. On the dust jacket flap the author Maurice B. Gardner noted that three of the segments in this novel were from his previous work Bantan Incredible from 1960.<br/><br/>Gardner was a Maine author and some of his correspondence and books can be found in the Maine State Library. Prosser was an illustrator for various books including Dragons and Nightmares by Robert Bloch 1968 and "Is The Devil A Gentleman" by Seabury Quinn 1970 both from Mirage Press. While interior artwork is more often seen in the marketplace the front cover artwork is much rarer and commands a premium because it was what sold the book. Very "Tarzan like in feel an interesting and action-filled image. As often the case with original book illustration the actual artwork is much larger than the published image. Also signed and inscribed to a previous owner Mrs. Dick Shepard. TLS regards Smith's inquiry concerning where to locate this book which was even then out of print Smith was able to find a used copy and also a list of books written by Mr. Hoffman Birney. Inscription to Mr. Smith reads: "To Mr. W. T. Smith -Possibly you have seen the old Goodyear cabin in Ogden- Mar 22 1940." The other inscription reads "To Mrs. Dick Shepard - With Compliments Charles Kelly." Inscriptions are found on front endpapers. Green dust jacket over green cloth boards with title gilt on front. DJ has mylar cover and is not price clipped. DJ is still bright but has moderate sunning to spine and light chipping at corners and top edge; boards have light soiling and wear to all edges; previous owner's bookplate on front endpaper; text block has light toning. Unsigned.<br/><br/> The original print of artwork from Maurice Sendak's 1963 "Where the Wild Things Are" was part of a boxed set released by Harper and Row in 1971. Entitled "Pictures by Maurice Sendak" the set includes original prints of images from the author's books here printed on single sheets rather than on two-page spreads. This particular image shows the characters napping in the forest. With scales fangs and horns these Wild Things display some of the characteristics that caused controversy for Sendak at the time as some parents found the drawings too grotesque. Today the vivid green leaves sherbet colored sky and finely-rendered fur speak to the author's beloved style and the character's poses communicate the emotion for which "Wild Things" is remembered. The print is in very good condition with wide margins as issued. Some very minor foxing in margins not affecting the image.<BR><BR>Maurice Sendak 1928-2012 was an American illustrator and writer known for his children's books. Producing illustrations for other authors as well as for television he is best remembered for "Where the Wild Things Are" which is considered by some to be one of the first contemporary picture books.This print is a lovely example and memento of his work.
