From the Children of America Maurice Sendak and Harper Collins Publishers January 20 1993". <b>SIGNED</b>.</p><p>Original art print on semi-stiff paper the design by Maurice Sendak and commissioned by his publishers as an official greeting to welcome the Clinton era -- it was published in major newspapers all across the USA on the actual inauguration day and may have been given to those invited to one of many inaugural parties: but exact limitation is unknown except it is quite rare and unusual. </p><p>The actual image appears to be a duotone from graphite with a red and blue single rule surround with caption below: overall measurement is 13-1/16 x 12-1/2 inches 33.2 x 31.8 cm. A small quantity was acquired directly from the artist who then signed each one in ink. It is the only political image Sendak did in his entire oeuvre. The authorship is perhaps not surprisingly a little obscure. The authors' full names as above are listed in the 1946 Catalog of Copyright Entries and the on-line catalog of the Bibliothek des Deutschen Historischen Museums while the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin substitutes "Samson" for "Nebelska". The BNF lists only the pseudonymous attributions. Wanda Stefanowska-Nebelska b.1919 under the nom-de-guerre "Christine" is listed in the database of the Musée de la résistance en ligne as a member of the Polish resistance in France. Maurice Denier if the author here is the same person was a playwright of the 1890s his identity slightly concealed by the reversed spelling. Published by C.D.L.R. Ceux de la Résistance for Christmas 1944. The cover illustrates the two devils on either side of the Cross of Lorraine with "V" for Victory. Two little devils join the FFI Forces Françaises de l'Intérieur and make things hot for the Germans. Provenance: Maurice Wilkes. <p>First edition offprint issue. Wilkes directed the design and construction of EDSAC the first readily usable full-scale stored-program computer. EDSAC was preceded in operation by the Manchester "Baby"prototype stored-program machine which ran for only a short time in 1948; in America BINAC was probably running programs about the same time but it too was a very short-lived machine.</p> <p>In addition to developing EDSAC Wilkes was responsible for a number of programming innovations such as labels macros and microprogramming that became standard in the computer industry. He studied physics at Cambridge University where he received his Ph.D. in 1936 with a thesis based on work performed in the Cavendish Laboratory on the propagation of very long radio waves in the ionosphere. While engaged in postgraduate research on this topic he was allowed to use Cambridge University's model differential analyzer to solve a difficult equation. This machine which Wilkes found "irresistible" Wilkes 1985 25 inspired an abiding interest in automatic computing. At the end of 1936 Wilkes was put in charge of Cambridge's model differential analyzer and the following year he joined the staff of the university's newly founded Mathematical Laboratory becoming its director after the close of World War II. The Mathematical Laboratory renamed the Computing Laboratory in the 1960s played a critical role in the development of the electronic digital computer.</p> <p>One of Wilkes's tasks during 1937 was to gather information about the special-purpose calculating machine invented by R. R. M. Mallock of Cambridge's Engineering Department which the Mathematical Laboratory was interested in purchasing. Wilkes described the machine as follows:</p> <p>The Mallock machine was an analogue device and was capable of solving ten simultaneous linear equations in ten unknowns. It was based on the use of tapped transformers with the windings connected to form a network. The accuracy obtainable from such an arrangement might be expected to be very low because of losses in the transformers. What made the Mallock machine give a useful accuracy-one part in 1000 in favourable cases-was the use of a highly ingenious feedback circuit known as a compensator associated with each transformer. As a piece of electronics this was well ahead of its time. . . .</p> <p>In order to solve a set of simultaneous equations one had first to set the coefficients on an array of digital switches. The roots were then obtained by adjusting another switch until a galvanometer showed zero. This had to be done for each root in turn. When I got to know him Mallock was experimenting with a device based on the use of telephone relays for performing this operation automatically and printing the result on a paper strip. Although this gear came with the Mallock machine it was not fully developed and we made no attempt to use it. However it gave me my first introduction to the use of telephone relays in computing or rather control circuits and to some of the tricks one can play with them Wilkes 1985 29. Wilkes 1999 no. 6. The "concise pictorial 'autobiography'" of the 34th President with an autograph note from Mamie Eisenhower to entertainer Maurice Chevalier matted and mounted on the front free end page. Thanking Chevalier for a message of sympathy after her husband's death in 1969 Eisenhower writes: "Your tribute to Ike warmed my heart and your message to me meant a great deal." 237 pp. Black cloth binding in fine condition; photo dust jacket with some wear to the edges otherwise in very good condition.<br style="">Chevalier it was reported in 1959 owed his life to Dwight D. Eisenhower: upon the liberation of Paris in 1945 Chevalier was threatened with death by firing squad for having entertained in France under the Nazi occupation. Chevalier who had been living with a Jewish woman at the time contended that he had only done so in order to facilitate a prisoner swap. Thanks to a word from General Eisenhower himself Chevalier was kept alive until an investigation could be carried out which proved that Chevalier was telling the truth.<br style="">The French actor cabaret singer and entertainer Maurice Chevalier is perhaps best known for his signature songs including "Louise" "Mimi" "Valentine" and "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" and for his films including The Love Parade and The Big Pond. His trademark attire was a boater hat which he always wore on stage with a tuxedo. In 1958 he starred with Leslie Caron and Louis Jourdan in Gigi and in the early 1960s he made eight films including Can-Can in 1960 and Fanny the following year.  The success of Gigi prompted Hollywood to give him an Academy Honorary Award that year for achievements in entertainment. <br style=""> Doubleday & Company, Inc. hardcover books

Unsigned.<br/><br/> The original print of artwork from Maurice Sendak's 1970 "In The Night Kitchen" was part of a boxed set released by Harper and Row in 1971. Entitled "Pictures by Maurice Sendak" the set includes original prints of images from the author's books here printed on single sheets rather than on two-page spreads. <br><br>This particular image shows a dream-like scene of three bakers gazing upwards at the main character a little boy named Mickey flying over a milk bottle in a small plane made of bread. The background for the scene resembles a cityscape with pantry and kitchen items portrayed as buildings and skyscrapers. The bakers closely resemble Oliver Hardy a comic actor known for his silent films. This is thought to be a reference to the 1930s a period Sendak evokes throughout the book in his style use of color and allusions to pop-culture and design. <br><br> In his introduction to this box set Sendak writes of In the Night Kitchen as "influenced not by an artistic mode of the past that I consider superior but by art that was very real and potent to a child growing up in America in the thirties and forties. Night Kitchen and to a lesser degree Wild Things reflect a popular American art both crass and oddly surrealistic an art that encompasses the Empire State Building syncopated Disney cartoons and aluminum-clad comic-book heroes an Art Moderne whose richness of detail was most sensuously catalogued in the movies." His diversion from his usual style inspired by Victorian artists and children's books is evident in his use of deeper more muted colors and the lack of cross-hatching utilized in most of his work to show depth and texture. The print is in very good condition with wide margins as issued. Some faint foxing in margins not affecting the image.<BR><BR>Maurice Sendak 1928-2012 was an American illustrator and writer known for his children's books. Producing illustrations for other authors as well as for television he is best remembered for "Where the Wild Things Are" which is considered by some to be one of the first contemporary picture books.This print is a lovely example and memento of his work. Much of the film is represented in minute detail along with test shots set design shots and many candid moments from the set. Dramatic high-contrast images of starring actors Demongeot answering telephones and in heated embraces with several sheets capturing a formal dinner with the cast and crew presumably the film's premiere. Most with 12 images per sheet a few with 6-frame strips of 35mm film each image with a series number and all sheets credit at the top the photo laboratory Tele-Photo film studio Cinedis film title and photographer Apoteker. Housed in a red paper 2-ring binder with French titles printed on the front. Several with brief numerical annotations on the verso. <br/><br/>Noirish crime thriller based on Michel Lebrun's novel "Un Silence de Mort" 1957 starring Demongeot as Sylvie married to Jean Ronet an executive at a fashion magazine. Jean's boss André Servais obsesses over Sylvie whose demure femininity can be fatal. An early film credit for still photographer Paul Apoteker whose "Too Late for Love" 1959 is regarded as his first credited film. His dramatic execution would later be seen in Clouzot's "The Truth" 1960 Sautet's romance noir "Classe Tous Risques" 1960 and Woody Allen's "Love and Death" 1975. Demongeot and Ronet are amply represented throughout the collection including a preliminary mockup of the poster art. <br/><br/>Photos 8.25 x 10.25 inches a few slightly variant sizes hole-punched and two with square cuts.
