Published in Paris to promote support the reconstruction of areas recaptured from the Germans the caption translates as 'Homecoming: Immediate relief in liberated areas'.<BR><BR>Maurice Neumont 1868-1930 was a Parisian artist who produced a number of propaganda posters during the First World War.<BR><BR>This poster is laid on linen and in fair condition. Boldly signed by Maurice Sendak on the half-title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Sendak's homage to New York City and the movies of the 1930s In the Night Kitchen "spins the reader through the surreal fantasy of a child's dream like Alice into Wonderland or Dorothy into Oz." Like most of Sendak's work Kitchen is "a celebration of the primal sensory world of childhood and an affirmation of its imaginative potency" Silvey 586. Having received nine awards The Night Kitchen's popularity is evident but so is its controversy. When three-year-old protagonist Mickey enters the Night Kitchen he loses his pajamas and is fully naked in some parts of the story. Some critics have objected to Mickey's nudity which is fully depicted and others have interpreted sexual innuendo in the proceeding events. Consequently the book's release in the United States sparked debate with the inclusion of child nudity frequently noted as morally problematic. Unsigned.<br/><br/> The original print of artwork from Maurice Sendak's 1970 "In The Night Kitchen" was part of a boxed set released by Harper and Row in 1971. Entitled "Pictures by Maurice Sendak" the set includes original prints of images from the author's books here printed on single sheets rather than on two-page spreads. <br><br>This particular image shows three bakers gleefully preparing a cake for the oven while singing and main character a little boy named Mickey is visible in the top left corner. The bakers closely resemble Oliver Hardy a comic actor known for his silent films. This is thought to be a reference to the 1930s a period Sendak evokes throughout the book in his style use of color and allusions to pop-culture. <br><br> In his introduction to this box set Sendak writes of In the Night Kitchen as "influenced not by an artistic mode of the past that I consider superior but by art that was very real and potent to a child growing up in America in the thirties and forties. Night Kitchen and to a lesser degree Wild Things reflect a popular American art both crass and oddly surrealistic an art that encompasses the Empire State Building syncopated Disney cartoons and aluminum-clad comic-book heroes an Art Moderne whose richness of detail was most sensuously catalogued in the movies." His diversion from his usual style inspired by Victorian artists and children's books is evident in his use of deeper more muted colors and the lack of cross-hatching utilized in most of his work to show depth and texture. The print is in very good condition with wide margins as issued. Some faint foxing in margins not affecting the image.<BR><BR>Maurice Sendak 1928-2012 was an American illustrator and writer known for his children's books. This particular image shows the book's protagonist Jennie a Streayham terrier seated at the table with a glass. A child is sitting on the floor. This illustration is characteristic of Sendak's beloved style using visible pen marks to create a variety of textures depicting characters anthropomorphically and conveying the mood of the scene through dramatic expressions. In the introduction to the box set Sendak writes of his influences and attributes this style of illustration to Victorian artists George Pinwell and Arthur Hughes. Occasional manuscript corrections in pen throughout. Some shelf wear but overall very good. Inscribed by the authors on the front pastedown. This is a potentially unique typescript of a historical novel about early 20th-century China leading up to the Chinese Communist Revolution in 1949. "Nakunin" is a term in Shanghainese or Hu the dialect of Chinese spoken in Shanghai and the surrounding region for "foreigner" in particular connoting a foreigner who could never truly become a local. The novel is a bit of an adventure story frequently hinting at racier activities behind closed doors. Perhaps semi-autobiographical the main characters travel across China India and Indochina evading capture and corrupt officials in hopes of reaching freedom. <br> <br> Ruby and Maurice Baumgarten might well have known of what they wrote thanks to their "exciting background.that has all the ingredients of an action-packed Hollywood scenario" JEWISH HERALD. Though French Maurice was raised by his archaeologist parents traveling throughout the Near and Middle East; he served in the French Army in Indochina and started an import-export business in Shanghai. He was in Calcutta at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor and never returned to Shanghai transferring his business to Calcutta. Soon after he met Ruby née Bonner and in 1949 they decided to move to Providence R.I. to start a tea importing business and shop. This copy is inscribed to Dr. Leonard Robbins possibly the same Dr. Robbins who was president of the school board in Houston and led the majority decision to desegregate public schools there in 1970. Nevertheless this book and its authors remain a bit of a mystery. We could find no listing of this book in OCLC or at auction and no further information about the authors aside from an article in THE JEWISH HERALD and a listing for them in POLK'S PROVIDENCE CITY DIRECTORY for 1949. Starring actors Noel-Noel and Grey are in nearly every image with a few featuring Sophie Daumier. All with numerical annotations in holograph pencil housed in an original French Crumiere photo paper box. <br/><br/>Leon Martin's Noel-Noel daughter is engaged to the son of a wealthy businessman and he goes to the extreme to make a good first impression. Prolific Paul Misraki composed the music and a sequel was made by Jean Dreville with Noel-Noel reprising his role called "A pied a cheval et en Sputnik" 1958 "Sputnik" in the US.<br/><br/>5 photos 3.5 x 4.25 inches and 61 photos 5 x 7 inches all with small white borders at the foot. From Wagner-Camp "Morris's entertaining journal takes the reader from Saint Louis to the Colorado Rockies in the summer of 1863." He intended to go to the Montana gold fields but changed to Denver and the Colorado gold fields due to a breakdown in the steamer at Saint Louis. Gold had been discovered in Montana in 1862 and was the "new gold rush" during the 1860's and 70's. The Colorado gold fields were discovered earlier in 1859 at Pike's Peak and the front range of the Rockies. The 100000 or so that participated were know as "Fifty-Niners" and the rapid population growth led to the Colorado Territory created in 1861 and the State in 1876.Henri Comte De Chambord 1820-1883 was a disputed King of France for seven days from August 2nd to the 9th in 1830. From the library of Douglas Fairbanks Jr. 1909-2000 -- an iconic American actor from Hollwood's Golden Era and a highly decorated naval officer of World War II -- with his bookplate on the verso of the front flyleaf. Inscribed to him by Chevalier on the half-title page. His connection to Chevalier seems to be a long one: Fairbanks Sr. 1883-1939 offered Chevalier a star billing with Mary Pickford but Chevalier was hesitant to perform in a silent film. It is ilkely that their paths crossed often as Chevalier primarily associated with Paramount studios and Fairbanks were part of a prolific and powerful Hollywood coterie that included such giants as Charlie Chaplin and D. With the bookplate of H. Bedford-Jones the owner of the original letters and with a one-page TLS from Chinard to Bedford-Jones sending some information concerning publication affixed to the front endpaper. French poet Maurice de Guerin 1810-1839 was probably more celebrated for his prose. Its charm arises from Guerin's absorbing passion for nature. According to Saint-Beuve "no French poet or painter has rendered so well the feeling for nature - the feeling not so much for details as for the ensemble and the divine universality the feeling for the origin of things and the sovereign principle of life." This illustrated pamphlet is the catalog for the second exposition of the Arc-en-Ciel group of French English and American artists held in Paris at the gallery of Goupil et Cie. The text lists the titles of the exposition's 308 works of art as well as the names and addresses of the contributing artists. As de Waleffe explains in his introduction the name l'Arc-en-Ciel "the rainbow" refers to the beauty and joy that arts brought to France after so many years of the "storm" of World War I.
