A rare sale catalogue of a varied and rich collection formed by one of Napoleon's trusted advisors. Hauterive 1754-1830 statesman and archivist fled from the Revolution to the United States where he served as French consul in New York. He was recalled to France by Talleyrand to a high post in the office of foreign affairs in 1798. The two collaborated on De L'État de la France à la fin de l'an VIII 1800 which justified Napoleon's coup d'état to the world. D'Hauterive entered Napoleon's inner circle and significantly shaped the foreign policy of Napoleonic France. He was essential in the drafting of the Concordat of 1801 and his influence shines through in the final document. A disagreement with Talleyrand led to d'Hauterive's reassignment to the archives of the foreign ministry where he distinguished himself and was elected a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres in 1820. 627 lots. At the beginning of the catalogue the experts of this sale Duchesne and Dubois highlight some of the finer pieces in the collection such as prints by Dürer Schongauer Lucas van Leyden Rembrandt Hollar Poussin Rubens etc.; the famous books of Piranesi no. 167 Buffon no. 348 and Le Vaillant no. 350; and artifacts from Greece Italy Egypt as well as Hawaii California and Alaska. One section lists "Objets fabriqués par des peuples sauvages." D'Hauterive also possessed an impressive library of illustrated books which is described herein including books on architecture natural history costumes emblems voyages and a handful of manuscripts. Unpaginated 31 leaves all of a weighty card stock or over 60 pages about half with color plates we count 31 but one can quibble about whether one or two of them so qualify. Eleven of these are non-product illustrations -- attempts to capture concepts or abstractions -- the balance being exquisite depictions of the company's fine perfume bottles. The catalogue exudes an unalloyed dreamy luxury in every respects as befits high-end perfume marketing. Cassandre a name adopted by the Ukrainian-born Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron 1901-1968 -- his parents were French -- was a highly celebrated commercial artist theatrical designer magazine illustrator and poster artist. He worked heavily with the prestige printer Draeger as well as the couturier Lucien Lelong and others. In time he was awarded the French Legion of Honor. Lelong was a top Parisian couturier from the twenties til his retirement in the late forties. He was himself not a designer but rather relied on a stable of designers and among his proteges was Christian Dior. As this catalogue also shows dress designers were branching out into fragrances for a long time; this catalogue predates the creation of Chanel No. 5 by a few years. Light wear to the wraps -- a minor closed tear along the upper joint and some minor wrinkling or creasing to the cover paper. Ghostwritten by all accounts by a young Sinclair Lewis who 15 years later would become the first American writer to win the Nobel Prize in literature. Tight and VG with no writing or markings of any kind foxing etc. to speak of. And in a bright VG- and yet still very presentable example of the fragile dustjacket. The jacket shows a degree of chipping along the panel edges resulting in just a touch of loss to the title at the spine crown and the publisher's address at the foot of the rear panel a 3" chip in the center of the spine roughly the size of a quarter and then running down a bit inconspicuous staining and tape re-inforcing to the inside of the dustjacket and finally light staining --and a bit of creasing-- to the front panel. Thick octavo illustrated with 72 crisp black-and-white photos Introduction/Preface by R. Norris Williams 2nd the 1914 National Champion of the United States. Maurice McLoughlin 1890-1957 not only won the US Championships in 1912 and 1913 and earned the world #1 ranking in 1914 he was also the first men's player from the Western United States Nevada to become US Champion and the first US finalist at Wimbledon where he lost to Anthony Wilding in 1913. <br/><br/> George H. Maurice Sendak decided to become an illustrator after watching Walt Disney's film Fantasia at the age of twelve. One of his first professional commissions was to create window displays for the toy store FAO Schwarz. His illustrations were first published in 1947 in a textbook titled Atomics for the Millions by Maxwell Leigh Eidinoff. Shot by photographer Cliff Leary with his stamp on the verso as well as a numeric reference number 6434 and the stamp of a Scandanavian press agency Kobenhavnerinden. <br/><br/>A huge hit for Paramount in 1929 a comforting fact for the studio given that it was released just after the Wall Street crash. The great Ernst Lubitsch's first talking film the film debut of Jeanette MacDonald the American debut of Maurice Chevalier. Too "The Love Parade" is considered by many to be the first musical film in which songs were integrated with story and the first to make innovative first use of music with no image at the end of the film. Finally a wonderful example of the kinds of magnificent physical artwork that would routinely go into major premieres at the beginning of the talking era. <br/><br/>8 x 10 inches. In an archival mat. Maurice" "So far everything has been too exciting - it seems my Wild Things has caused quite a sensation & I'm busy from morning to night. I'm beat - but it's great fun." This letter also deals with receiving a pamphlet on doll houses and Sendak's visits to Windsor and Hampton Court. Maurice Bernard Sendak 1928 - 2012 was an American illustrator and writer of children's books. He became widely known for his book Where the Wild Things Are first published in 1963. Born to Jewish-Polish parents his childhood was affected by the death of many of his family members during the Holocaust. Sendak also wrote works such as In the Night Kitchen Outside Over There and illustrated many works by other authors including the Little Bear books by Else Holmelund Minarik. He won practically every award for illustrating children's books; most notably: the Caldecott Medal from the ALA as illustrator of "the most distinguished American picture book for children" Where the Wild Things Are 1964 Sendak was also one of the Caldecott runners-up seven times from 1954 to 1982 more than any other illustrator. The Hague: "Aux Depens de la Compagnie" 1753. First edition. There is a lack of clarity regarding the authorship of this work. The probable main author is Herouville de Claye 1712-82 French soldier who served in a number of campaigns under Louis XV in Flanders and Germany. He eventually rose to become a lieutenant-general and inspector general of the infantry. He wrote several works on military tactics. The manuscript of the present work was found in the papers of Maurice Comte de Saxe 1696-1750 marshal of France and one of the greatest generals of his time. Before his death Maurice revised Herouville de Claye's text and added a number of comments but left it in manuscript. The early editions bear Saxe's name on the title. The present book describes Herouville de Claye and Saxe's plan for re-organizing the French army along the lines of the Roman legions.
