First edition, 3 vols., comprising 2 volumes of text, 8vo (202 x 125 mm) xv, 423, [3]; 348, [2], with final errata leaf to each volume, wanting the half-titles, plus 4to atlas volume (305 x 220 mm), title, 1 leaf description of the plates and maps, 18 mostly large folding engraved maps and plates, all very clean and bright, text volumes in contemporary speckled calf, double gilt fillet to covers, spine gilt, Marchioness of Downshire monogram with crown above in top compartment of each volume, minor rubbing, otherwise attractively bound text volumes in near fine condition, the atlas in the original blue paper covered boards with original printed title label on upper cover, also in fine clean condition. Rare account of a voyage to the East Indies and a description of French possessions in the Indian Ocean (Mauritius and Reunion) and of Java including Batavia, now Jakarta, which was then ruled by France. The atlas volume contains 7 maps all engraved by Tardieu and it includes a fine large map of Java (380 x 630 mm). The 11 other plates show costumes, native inhabitants etc. and include 3 fine folding views of Batavia and a view of the Dutch settlement of Keppen on the island of Timor. Volume 2 includes a substantial vocabulary of the Malay language. Provenance: Mary Hill (n?e Sandys, 1764-1836), Marchioness of Downshire and Baroness Sandys; the library of the Second Baron Hesketh of Ombersley Court, Worcestershire.

Field Marshall Sir William M. Gomm was Governor of Mauritius, 1842-49. The text which is part in French and part in English includes a letter from the Hon. Mr. G. C. Cuninghame on the Dodo being on the islands of Mauritius, Bourbon, and Rodrigues, about 200 years previously (pp.91-93), and a fascinating discussion on how people and boats could have reached Madagascar from the Malays, with further interesting comments on the Malayan language (pp.136-148). Other interesting topics include the cultivation of canes at Bourbon Island, a new mode of preserving and cutting canes, the diseases of canes, preservation of the roots of the manioc, and electricity applied to the growth of plants.

MAURICE BARING'S COPY WITH HIS HOLOGRAPH SIGNATURE ON BLANK PRELIMINARY OF FIRST VOLUME, AND BOOKPLATE ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPERS OF ALL THREE VOLUMES. The set also carries the fine nineteenth century engraved armorial bookplate of Sir Andrew Noble of Ardmore and Ardardan on front paste-downs. The Trollope Society records that the author's sixth novel was written 'mainly in railway carriages, since his work for the Post Office entailed a good deal of travelling'. The story is drawn from his memories of his work as a clerk at the GPO in St Martin-le-Grand, and Richard Mullen has called it the most autobiographical of Trollope's novels. This book is a collection of poems about Montmartre by Vertex (there is even a poem dedicated to Utrillo and Valore!), illustrated with reproductions of drawings by many artists associated with Montmartre, including Marie Laurencin, Dunoyer de Segonzac, Dignimont, Laprade, Charles GuÈrin, Roger Wild. and Vertex himself. Also illustrated with FOUR LOOSE HORS-TEXTE ETCHINGS, one each by Utrillo, Valore, Picasso, and Bernard Lamotte.. All four etchings are signed in the plate. THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING ASSOCIATION COPY printed for Robert Conchon. On the verso of the title-page is a fine presentation inscription to Conchon underneath the reproduced drawing by Vertex, which he has colored by hand in this copy. Furthermore, THE ETCHINGS BY UTRILLO AND VALORE ARE SIGNED IN PENCIL BY THE ARTISTS. Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955), among the greatest of modern artists, married his fellow artist (and former patron) Lucie Valore (1878-1967) in 1935, after she had been widowed. Utrillo made very few original prints, and signed impressions are of the utmost rarity. From a total edition of 110 numbered copies, this is ONE OF ONLY 15 BEAUTIFULLY PRINTED ON FINE MARAIS WOVE PAPER. From the private collection of Sylvan Cole (1918-2005), the leading American print dealer. Large folio. Loose as issued in wraps. UNCUT AND UNOPENED.
