br. A metà degli anni Ottanta fu pianificato un volume dei "Cahiers de L'Herne" dedicato a Blanchot. Il progetto, tuttavia, naufragò in seguito alle risposte negative - più che altro imbarazzati dinieghi - di coloro che erano stati invitati a partecipare. La scoperta dell'"oscuro" passato di Maurice Blanchot, in particolare la sua affinità con i gruppi parigini della giovane destra "non conformista" negli anni Trenta, rendeva il progetto troppo controverso e scottante. Nel presente volumetto Jean-Luc Nancy, curatore insieme a Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe di quel "Cahier" mai apparso, contestualizza le vicende legate a quel fallimento sulla scorta di una lettre-récit di Blanchot del 1984, in cui il grande critico tentava di ripercorrere gli eventi personali e collettivi negli anni che precedettero il secondo conflitto mondiale. La ricostruzione storica di Nancy e la lettera-racconto di Blanchot, seguite da una breve lettera coeva di Dionys Mascolo, offrono l'occasione per riflettere sui possibili modi di vivere il rapporto con il proprio passato, sulla responsabilità della memoria che incombe su tutti noi e sull'intreccio tra istanza autobiografica e quell'écriture posthume teorizzata da Blanchot.
