AN UNPARALLELED COLLECTION OF ILLUSTRATED BOOKS BY ONE OF THE MOST ACCOMPLISHED BOOK ARTISTS OF THE 20TH CENTURY. ALL OF THESE BOOKS ARE ILLUSTRATED WITH ORIGINAL COPPER ENGRAVINGS / ETCHINGS /AQUATINTS / ROULETTES. Maurice Leroy, like many other illustrators of his time, specialized in lightly erotic depictions of feminine beauty. Unlike virtually all the other illustrators of his time, however, he infused tremendous imagination into his prints, and demonstrated absolute mastery of all the major techniques of draftsmanship and copper engraving. The ten books in this collection all come from the height of his career, and most of them are SPECIAL COPIES WITH ADDITIONAL SUITES OF THE PRINTS AND/OR ORIGINAL DRAWINGS. (1) Le Diable amoureux, by Cazotte. One of only a few copies with the prints beautifully illuminated by hand; (2) Another copy of the same, one of 127 copies with a remarque suite; (3) Le malheureux petit Voyage, by Soulages. One of only 25 copies (tete) with an original drawing used for one of the illustrations (signed), a second suite in color, a suite in black, and a second suite of the wood-engraved decorations by Poilliot. Beautifully bound in full leather with original color drawings by Leroy on both covers; (4) La Belle sans chemise, ou Eve ressuscitee. A unique artist's copy, with a stunning original color drawing (signed), a remarque suite, and four (likely unique) color separation proofs; (5) Le bon Plaisir, by Henri de Regnier. One of 36 copies (tete) with an original color drawing used for one of the illustrations (signed), a remarque suite in color, and a remarque suite in black; (6) L'Eloge de la folie, by Erasmus. One of 75 copies with a remarque suite and the "planche refusee"; (7) Le roman de Tristan et Iseut. One of 24 copies with two suites of the etchings and an original watercolor; (8-10) Three other limited-edition books with original prints. 4tos. Except for the bound volume (described above), all loose as issued in board chemises and slipcases. One slipcase damaged, else FINE AND BRIGHT, INSIDE AND OUT. A monumental collection, a testament to the artist's varied and profound talent. OVER 1,000 PRINTS IN ALL.

AN EXCEPTIONAL COPY OF THIS IMPORTANT LIVRE D'ARTISTE, WITH PENCIL-SIGNED ETCHINGS BY MAURICE UTRILLO AND HIS WIFE, LUCIE VALORE, AND UNSIGNED ETCHINGS BY PICASSO AND BERNARD LAMOTTE. This book is a collection of poems about Montmartre by Vertex (there is even a poem dedicated to Utrillo and Valore!), illustrated with reproductions of drawings by many artists associated with Montmartre, including Marie Laurencin, Dunoyer de Segonzac, Dignimont, Laprade, Charles GuÈrin, Roger Wild. and Vertex himself. Also illustrated with FOUR LOOSE HORS-TEXTE ETCHINGS, one each by Utrillo, Valore, Picasso, and Bernard Lamotte.. All four etchings are signed in the plate. THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING ASSOCIATION COPY printed for Robert Conchon. On the verso of the title-page is a fine presentation inscription to Conchon underneath the reproduced drawing by Vertex, which he has colored by hand in this copy. Furthermore, THE ETCHINGS BY UTRILLO AND VALORE ARE SIGNED IN PENCIL BY THE ARTISTS. Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955), among the greatest of modern artists, married his fellow artist (and former patron) Lucie Valore (1878-1967) in 1935, after she had been widowed. Utrillo made very few original prints, and signed impressions are of the utmost rarity. From a total edition of 110 numbered copies, this is ONE OF ONLY 15 BEAUTIFULLY PRINTED ON FINE MARAIS WOVE PAPER. From the private collection of Sylvan Cole (1918-2005), the leading American print dealer. Large folio. Loose as issued in wraps. UNCUT AND UNOPENED. A few creases to extreme margin of half-title, else FINE AND BRIGHT. In the original (somewhat worn) board chemise and slipcase. Utrillo was surely Montmartre's most emblematic artist, and the signed etchings by him and his wife make this a truly wonderful book. Since these etchings are loose (as issued), they are ready for framing.

First Edition, frontispiece of the ship on the fifteenth morning, vii, [1], 303, [1] pp., original cloth, gilt, hinges a little frayed, all edges gilt, a nice bright copy. The author set sail from Cork to Port Louis in Mauritius. On the homeward journey he sailed for Port Elizabeth in South Africa, and hr gives a short account of what existed in the town at this period. He considered that the old name of Algoa Bat was far more suitable; and depreciated the custom of renaming places in Africa, which was so prevalent at this time. Dr. Blenkinsop made a stay of some duration at Cape Town, and gives a description of the town and its inhabitants, making some facetious remarks on what is termed the "posterial luxuriance" of some of the females of the country. Continuing the journey home he called at St. Helena, describing James Town, and steered for Ascension Island, which he calls "a desolate island". The small British settlement there, "exhibits the striking contrast of a green patch on the burnt soil, with a few neat white houses." Mendelssohn, p.136; Toussaint and Adolphe, Bibliography of Mauritius, D165.
