1960231051960. New Jersey Black Photography Vernacular photographic archive documenting African American daily life in Newark New Jersey during the 1960s a period of rapid demographic change urban disinvestment and intensifying civil rights activism in one of the nation's most significant Black urban centers. Newark's Black population expanded substantially in the mid-twentieth century through the Great Migration forming dense neighborhood networks alongside persistent segregation housing inequality and strained relations with municipal authorities that would culminate in the 1967 Newark uprising. These photographs provide primary visual evidence of everyday life within this context capturing social interaction leisure commerce and street-level experience. The archive supports research into African American urban history Northern civil rights conditions and the lived realities of Black communities in industrial cities during the late civil rights era.

Archive of 12 Large silver gelatin photographs. Each measure 8" x 10" on matte photo paper depicting street scenes recreation and community gathering spaces in Newark New Jersey with several images identified as taken along Sussex Avenue. The group includes an outdoor performance by an all-Black band on a public stage scenes of children and adults along residential streets and sidewalks and commercial life including three Black individuals standing outside a storefront marked by a neon "Fish Market" sign indicating neighborhood retail environments. One photograph shows a Black man and a white man standing together on a sidewalk possibly in a social or friendly context offering visual evidence of interracial presence within an urban neighborhood often characterized in historical narratives by segregation and tension. Additional images depict leisure activities such as boating and public park use as well as candid interactions among residents reinforcing the range of everyday experiences beyond protest or crisis imagery

Taken together these photographs document the texture of daily life in Newark immediately before and during a period of national attention to urban unrest providing a counterpoint to dominant media representations that often centered violence rather than community continuity. The images show Newark's Black residents moving through neighborhood streets businesses and public spaces documenting everyday community life and social interaction in the 1960s urban North. Light edge wear minor creasing and surface marks consistent with handling; overall very good condition. As visual records of ordinary experience in a historically significant urban center the archive contributes to broader studies of Black Northern life postwar migration and the social conditions that shaped civil rights and urban policy debates in the 1960s. unknown

1962690511962. Newark NJ: February 5 1962 to September 21 1965. Newark NJ: February 5 1962 to September 21 1965. Daily Record of a Police Officer in Newark New Jersey in the Early 1960s Manuscript. Newark New Jersey. Personal Logbook of a Newark New Jersey Police Officer. Newark NJ February 5 1962-September 21 1965. 500 pp. Thumb-tabbed index. Folio 13-3/4" x 8-1/2". Three-quarter cloth over contrasting pebbled cloth raised bands and faded gilt ornaments and title Record to spine. Some rubbing to extremities with light wear to spine ends and corners heavier wear to fore-edges of boards. Text in neat hand to rectos and versos of all 500 pages. $650. This privately compiled record allows us to trace the daily work life of a police officer in Newark New Jersey in the years immediately preceding the riots of 1967. At this time Newark was coping with deindustrialization migration of the white middle class to the suburbs and an influx of poor African Americans who were confronted with housing and job discrimination. At the same time the composition of the city's government and police force was predominantly white. Compiled with great care it as both a log book and diary. Here is a list of typical entries: "Responded to Police Headquarters on a call from Lt. O'Leary of the night bureau. From there with Det. Thran to N.Y.C. to pick up prisoner" "Assigned to the New York Police Academy for school" "On duty with Det. Rolleri Lt. Pichel working desk in author's absence" "Assigned in uniform at 5:30am for detail at Newark Airport" "Attending seminar at Rutgers New Brunswick" "Returned to duty in the 1st squad from prosecutor's office" and "Home for working Saturday." He had a few interesting assignments. He was part of a "Special Detail guarding President Kennedy at Columbus Day Parade" and was part of a detail to "guard Sen. Humphrey" when he visited the city. However most of the entries chronicle crimes apprehensions arrests and responses to complaints. Many of these are cases of vandalism petty theft low-level violence and other "quality of life" issues that afflict cities in decline. unknown books

18643721N.p. but most likely Newark N.J. 1864. Good plus. Letterpress broadside printed in two columns 16.5 x 10 inches. Old folds small chip to top outer margin two tiny holes affecting just a few letters. A very rare Unionist broadside supporting the re-election of Abraham Lincoln in the critical presidential contest of 1864. The present broadside was authored in early June 1864 by New Jersey Republican Party stalwart Horace N. Congar an editor diplomat and politician who was at that time serving as U.S. consul to Hong Kong. In this rather stirring broadside which Congar writes from his position in Hong Kong he lauds "the thousands of earnest faithful men who are giving freely of their blood and treasure to the suppression of this infamous rebellion" and "the noble daring the undaunted courage and the determined valour of our brave soldiers of Freedom" and urges that "in November New Jersey will stand in the unbroken rank of States giving their verdict for the Party of Union." He also spends considerable space discussing the clear role of "the social moral and political evil" of slavery as the precipitating event of the Civil War. Congar writes that "the evil it has wrought was as natural as the poisoned breath of the Upas tree." Stated clearly Congar writes "I heartily rejoice at the destruction of slavery" and looks forward to the time when "I shall tread my native land with a newer life if within its boundless domain there shall not be heard the clanking chain or the cry of the suffering and the oppressed."

"Horace Newton Congar 1817-1893 was a radical republican politician during the midnineteenth century and served on both the state and national levels. Mr. Congar had a great love for his party and hope for its success which is reflected in his writing . Horace Newton Congar was born in Newark on July 31 1817. He married Isabell Reeves and had two children; a daughter Ella and a son Horace Junior. Horace Congar taught school for a while and he studied law in his leisure time. He was admitted to the New Jersey State Bar in 1847 and later Cornelius Boice of Plainfield and Lewis Grove of Newark were his law partners. Congar was a friend of the abolitionist cause and he was one of the founders of the antislavery Free Soil Party in New Jersey. The party slogan ‘Free Soil Free Speech Free Labor and Free Men’ basically described the party platform. Congar later became a delegate from New Jersey to the Republican National Convention in 1848 which was held in Buffalo. He supported the nomination of Van Buren for president and Adams for vice-president" - New Jersey Historical Society.

A rare and unusual Lincoln campaign broadside with just two physical copies in OCLC at AAS and Middlebury College. unknown

One side features a map with an aerial view of the region from New York City in the far distance to the Barnegat Inlet in the foreground highlighting the railroads and major automobile roads in the area. Light wear Good or so.

The broadside lists 36 campaign pamphlets supporting the re-election of Abraham Lincoln and denouncing the "Copperhead Democrats."
The stakes in the election could not be higher: "Hitherto parties have been divided upon questions of policy; but in the present contest the issue is boldly made up between the maintenance of our Constitutional Government on the one hand and on the other of its base and cowardly surrender to more than half vanquished treason armed in bloody array for its overthrow and the erection on its ruins of a despotism more odious than the world has tolerated in modern times."
Not in Felcone.
