180034359Newark: Printed by Matthias Day 1800. Title 1-456; i-xxii; 1-46. Errata sheet bound in. 1 vols. 8vo signed in fours. Full contemporary sheepskin border of blind-stamped dots on covers. Owners' signatures one contemporary and stamps. Some wear to joints and hinges generally browned dampstaining to preliminaries at gutter else a very good sturdy copy. A FIRST IN WOMEN'S AND BLACK SUFFRAGE. Title 1-456; i-xxii; 1-46. Errata sheet bound in. 1 vols. 8vo signed in fours. Notable on page 231 paragraph XI is a reiteration of legislation originally set fourth in the New Jersey Constitution in 1776 reading in part: "And be it enacted That all free inhabitants of this state of full age who are worth fifty pounds proclamation money and have resided within the county in which they claim a vote for twelve months immediately preceding the election shall be entitled to vote for all public officers."

Once dismissed as a possible oversight or sloppy wording on the part of its framers historians now believe that the phrase "all free inhabitants" intentionally extended the right to vote not only to women but to free blacks as well as aliens. In addition the act does include a property requirement only that the person be worth "fifty pounds proclamation money" which included cash. This short-lived legislation which was rescinded in 1807 makes New Jersey the first state to extend the right to vote citizens regardless of race or gender. On the first leaf of a bifolium the recto of the second leaf being addressed by him to ‘Countess of Jersey / &c &c &c’. In good condition lightly aged and worn. Folded for postage. Written in high eighteenth-century style. Begins: ‘Madam / If you have receiv’d the slightest amusement from my imperfect composition I am most highly gratified and feel myself very sensibly flatter’d by the honor you confer upon me by your condescending to regret the loss which I have infinitely ye most reason to lament.’ He wishes her ‘every possible enjoyment’ of her ‘health and happiness in all your branches’ till he has ‘ye honor of paying you and Lord Jersey my respects in town’. He will ‘not fail to remember any commands you lay upon me’. The valediction with ornate signature reads: ‘I have ye honor to be / Madam / Your Ladyship’s most / obedt & obligd hum. Servt / Richd Cumberland’. There is a crude pencil portrait of a man’s face - perhaps Cumberland’s and perhaps drawn by the Countess - at the bottom right of the recto of the second leaf. 184840142Trenton New Jersey 1848. 2-1/2 pages entirely in ink manuscript on pale blue stationery 8" x 10." At head of letter: a printed presidential sticker 1" x 2-1/2": "For President Zachary Taylor. For Vice President Millard Fillmore." Very Good.

The Letter reflects Whigs' uncertainty about the direction of their Party. The most prominent Whigs Webster and Clay had failed to win the Presidency. Zachary Taylor a heroic general whose political opinions were a mystery seemed a better choice.
"I have received the letter which you addressed to me on behalf of the Whig Executive Committee of the two Houses of Congress desiring information of the state of public opinion in this state in regard to the candidate for the Presidency & other political topics which now interest the Whig Party. I have shown it to my associates upon the Whig Central Committee of this state and conferred with them upon the subjects of your inquiry.
"In regard to the Presidential candidate there is much division of opinion among the Whigs of New Jersey. Many of the most active and intelligent among them in every section of the state think that our candidate should be one whom we have never yet presented to the people. . . The minds of these persons are strongly turned towards Gen. Taylor.
"Others equally active and intelligent and equally devoted to the Whig Party think otherwise and their entire hopes and affections centre in Mr. Clay whose nomination they ardently desire and with whom they feel assured of triumph. The minds of others rest on Gen. Scott tho this class is by no means as numerous as either of the others.
"We confess ourselves unable to decide. . . Our State Convention to appoint delegates to the National Whig Convention will meet on 24th inst. and we await such further intelligence as the representations of the different counties in that body will bring us. . . The views which I have expressed are those of a majority of our Committee."
Wilson's correspondent was Congressman Hugh White of New York State elected as a Whig to Congress 1845-1851. unknown

Published Under the Authority of the Legislature by Virtue of an Act Approved April 4 1871. Trenton: John L. Murphy 1877. With a new introduction and new original material by Paul Axel-Lute by Paul Axel-Lute Collection Development Librarian Rutgers School of Law Library Newark. xii xxxiii 1556 pp. Reprinted 2005 by The Lawbook Exchange Ltd. The Revision of 1877 satisfied an 1871 act of the Legislature to "revise simplify arrange and consolidate" all the general and permanent public statutes of New Jersey." It is valuable today chiefly as a tool for tracing the history of legislation. As Axel-Lute observes in his introduction "there are nearly seven hundred current sections in New Jersey Statutes Annotated for which the oldest source cited in the historical note is the Revision of 1877. To trace these sections back to earlier sources the researcher must use marginal notes and enactment date information in the 1877 work" iii. In addition to his informative introduction Axel-Lute has added a detailed table of contents a feature that wasn't included in the original work. unknown
