The presentation of the entire corpus of Ionian Island constitutional texts many of which have not been readily available to the reading public before now is accompanied here by the insight of political and constitutional historians in specially commissioned introductory chapters. The constitutional texts reflect a complex web of converging and diverging forces that all contributed to the evolution of the constitutional debate in the Islands and which it is hoped will provide matter for further scholarly discussion regarding Ionian Island Greek European and Ottoman Turkish history.

CONTENTS:

The Republic of the Seven Islands: historical background

The transition shaped by diplomatic compromise from the old Venetian order of administrative autonomy to national and democratic integration

Constitutional texts of the Ionian Islands: a review

From non-constitutional improvisation to the Republican French: hopes and delusions

Choosing rulers: the allure of self-determination as a gambit in diplomatic intrigue

The Constitutional Treaty of 1800 and the 'Byzantine' Constitution. 199543004Oxford University Press. 1995. Hardcover. Near Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. DJ has light shelfwear. Stapled offprint of book review tipped in.; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 208 pages; According to legend Aspasia of Miletus was a courtesan the teacher of Socrates and the political adviser of her lover Pericles. Next to Sappho and Cleopatra she is the best known woman of the ancient Mediterranean. Yet continued uncritical reception of her depiction in Attic comedy and naive acceptance of Plutarch's account of her in his Life of Pericles prevent us from understanding who she was and what her contributions to Greek thought may have been. Madeleine Henry combines traditional philological and historical methods of analysis with feminist critical perspectives in order to trace the construction of Aspasia's biographical tradition from ancient times to the present. Through her analysis of both literary and political evidence Henry determines the ways in which Aspasia has become an icon of the sexually attractive and politically influential female how this construction has prevented her from taking her rightful place as a contributor to the philosophical enterprise and how continued belief in this icon has helped sexualize all women's intellectual achievements. This is the first work to study Aspasia's biographical tradition from ancient Greece to the present day. . 0195087127 . Oxford University Press hardcover

200010124The British Academy & Oxford University Press. 2000. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. One corner very lightly bumped else fine.; Proceedings of the British Academy 104; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 192 pages; Within the great diversity of their world the assertion of origin was essential to the ancient Greeks in defining their sense of who they were and how they distinguished themselves from neighbours and strangers. Each person's name might carry both identity and origin - 'I am' . . . inseparable from 'I come from' . . . Names have surfaced in many guises and locations - on coins and artefacts embedded within inscriptions and manuscripts - carrying with them evidence even from prehistoric and preliterate times. The Lexicon of Greek Personal Names has already identified more than 200000 individuals. The contributors to this volume draw on this resource to demonstrate the breadth of scholarly uses to which name evidence can be put. These essays narrate the stories of political and social change revealed by the incidence of personal names and cast a fascinating light upon both the natural and supernatural phenomena which inspired them. This volume offers dramatic illumination of the ways in which the ancient Greeks both created and interpreted their world through the specific language of personal names. . 0197262163 .
