61525c.1880. . Large albumen print. Good tonal range and in good condition; Dimensions: 270 x 370mm. 10.5 x 14.5 inches.<br /> The Temple of Olympian Zeus is a former colossal Corinthian temple at the foot of the Acropolis in the centre of Athens. Construction began in the 6th century BC during the rule of the Athenian tyrants but was not completed until the reign of Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD taking a total of 638 years to complete. The temple was reduced to ruins just a century after its completion after being pillaged during a barbarian invasion in 267 AD. However a substantial part of the temple remains despite centuries of extensive quarrying for building materials after the fall of the Roman Empire. <br /><br />Pictured here are only 15 of the original 104 columns still standing with a sixteenth column lying on the ground where it fell during a storm in 1852. The Acropolis is visible behind. Chairs and benches have been laid out around the base of the temple for people to rest. The site remains virtually unchanged today.<br /> [c.1880]. unknown

201332176Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press 2013 Book. As New. Soft cover. 1st Pbk Ed. Classical Spies is the first insiders account of the operations of the American intelligence service in World War II Greece. Initiated by archaeologists in Greece and the eastern Mediterranean the network drew on scholars personal contacts and knowledge of languages and terrain. While modern readers might think Indiana Jones is just a fantasy character Classical Spies discloses events where even Indy would feel at home: burying Athenian dig records in an Egyptian tomb activating prep-school connections to establish spies code-named Vulture and Chickadee and organizing parachute drops.Susan Heuck Allen reveals remarkable details about a remarkable group of individuals. Often mistaken for mild-mannered professors and scholars such archaeologists as University of Pennsylvanias Rodney Young Cincinnatis Jack Caskey and Carl Blegen Yales Jerry Sperling and Dorothy Cox and Bryn Mawrs Virginia Grace proved their mettle as effective spies in an intriguing game of cat and mouse with their Nazi counterparts. Relying on interviews with individuals sharing their stories for the first time previously unpublished secret documents private diaries and letters and personal photographs Classical Spies offers an exciting and personal perspective on the history of World War II. 420p.bibliography.index. Small white dots to back board else Fine. Inscribed to Fergus Millar from the editors.; 261 pages; The empire created by Alexander the Great's general Seleucus constituted the largest Hellenistic kingdom of the successor states: yet this is the first substantial treatment of Seleucid history to appear for fifty years. The authors approach this important and successful state from new perspectives seeing it as part of the Middle Eastern world rather than solely in Greco-Roman terms and arguing that the Seleucid state is best understood as heir to the great Achaemenid Persian empire and earlier Middle Eastern states. They investigate the economies social structures political systems and cultures of the many peoples making up the empire and analyze in the context of colonialism and imperialism such evidence as exists for cultural changes including Hellenization. The book makes accessible the great variety of new and important documents that have been recently discovered. It will be welcomed by students teachers and all readers with an interest in Hellenistic and Middle Eastern history.; Signed by Editors . 071562413X . Gerald Duckworth & Company hardcover
