L'opera contiene i celebri Mimi del celebre poeta greco antico Eroda, o Eronda (Alessandria d'Egitto o Coo, III secolo a.C. (404 pages) Explores the relations of the Italian cities with Rome and Carthage during the Second Punic War.The great Carthaginian general, Hannibal, invaded Italy during the Second Punic War (218-201 BC) with the hope of raising widespread rebellions among Rome's subordinate allies in the south. He was partly successful, but did not win over enough Italian cities to defeat Rome. Understanding their motivations reveals much, not just about the war itself, i1. Introduction, 2. Apulia, 3. 8vo, hardcover, 448pp. Situated on opposite flanks of Eurasia, ancient Mediterranean and Han-Chinese societies had a hazy understanding of each other's existence. But they had no grounded knowledge about one another, nor was there any form of direct interaction. In other words, their historical trajectories were independent. In recent years, however, many similarities between both cultures have been detected, which has energized the field of comparative history. The present volume adds to the debate a creative method of juxtaposing historical societies. Each contribution covers both ancient China and the Mediterranean in an accessible manner. Embarking from the observation that Greek, Roman, and Han-Chinese societies were governed by comparable features, the contributors to this volume explain the dynamic interplay between political rulers and the ruled masses in their culture specific manifestation as demos (Greece), populus (Rome) and min (China).
Gaius Julius Phadrus (1st century), was a Thracian slave who translated Aesop's fables into Latin verse. He was certainly more than a reproducer of Aesop, and can be credited with adding many fables of his own. A brief history of the Barbou Classics is given by Schweiger (II 1269). In 1742 Lenglet de Fresnoy persuaded Coustelier to start a series which was meant to be a French rival to the Elzeviers - even surpassing them in terms of scholarship and typography. Though this effort soon exhausted itself, it was revived by Jean Joseph Barbou in 1753. Seven of these attractive little books appeared in 1753-1755, and though there were more issued in the next decade, there was not enough market interest to support a sustained publishing program. They still stand as a monument to French scholarship and typography. This copy is priced low enough to allow for a nice new binding. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! SMALL BOX 5

Jean-Jacques Barthelemy (1716-1795) was a French writer who was especially interested in the classics and numismatics. He worked as the Keeper of the Royal Collection of Metals, and continued his post during the French Revolution. This, his most famous work, was first published in 1788. It tells a story of a young Scythian man, a descendant of the philosopher in the title, who tours Greece and writes about the customs and idiosyncrasies of each place he visits. It was considered a useful handbook for Greek classical studies, and helped students to real insights about early Greek culture. Translated from the French by William Beaumont for the original English language edition. S&S/AI 5808. EVANS2
