Book is in excellent condition in bright red cloth the decorative cover in gilt, gilt print and decoration at spine. Very light wear to corners and endpapers, prev. owner's name at front are only flaws. First published in 1856. Illustrated with 112 full page, very lavish plates plus other designs, almost all in full color. Large book, 13.25" tall. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Dust jacket shows edge wear, with chipping, small tear lower spine. Contents include: Ornament of 'Savage Tribes', Egyptian, Assyrian, Persian, that of Greece, Pompeii, Rome, Byzantium, Islam, Turkey, Moorish Spain, India, China, Celtic Europe, the Middle Ages, the Italian Renissance, Elizabethean England, Hindoo, Baroque Italy and 'Nature'.

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original color map. 50x60 cm. In Ottoman script. Scale: 1/200000. Ottoman map of Eastern Anatolia. Bargiri, Hoy, Baskal'a, Malazgird. It shows Lake Erçek located on the east of Lake Van which is an endorheic salt lake in Van Province in eastern Turkey, about 30 kilometres; on north side, Bargiri place where the oldest district of Van city; on east, Turkish and Azerbaijani and Iranian borders and Hoy city of the West Azerbaijan; and on west, map shows Malazgird [Malazgirt]. This is one the serie of the Bonn projection maps which are the first map series in modern techniques in Turkey and the Ottoman Empire. In order to produce these maps covering Turkish territory, Reconnaissance Branch was incorporated into The Mapping Commission. The maps were produced in the datum based on the latitude and longitude of Ayasofya Mosque in equal area Bonn Projection. The field works for the 123 sheets covering the country were conducted by 76 staff. The production was completed in 18 years starting from east west. Field works continued without stopping except in years 1914 and 1920. This map series called also reconnaissance maps contributed a lot to producing 1:25.000 scale maps.

Manuscript ownership of Richard Mansfield (1857-1907), who was considered the greatest actor of his era. Printed bookplate of J. Mortimer Lichtenauer (b. 1876), a famous art collector and painter of mural decorations in a Grecian style. The text includes "Aristotle's Treatise on Poetry" (Twining's translation); "Excerpta Critica" (Canons of Criticism from Various Sources); "Examination Papers"; Etc. This Irish classic in the history and criticism of Greek drama is quite scarce in the marketplace. John Richard Darley (1799-1884) was born in Fairfield, County Monaghan, Ireland, and was educated at Trinity College Dublin. During the First World War, Jaeckh was one of the main propagandists of the German-Turkish alliance and worked for Eugen Mittwoch and his Nachrichtenstelle für den Orient. In 1920, he founded the Deutsche Hochschule für Politik, a key liberal think tank of the Weimar Republic. Being a staunch Anti-Nazi, he emigrated to Britain in the 1930s. In 1932, he became international director of the newly founded New Commonwealth Society. In 1940, he migrated further to the United States where he became professor at Columbia University and founded the Columbia Middle East Institute in 1948. In the 1940s he headed the Middle Eastern Department of the British Ministry of Information, a close associate was Eugen Mittwoch. He is remembered to be an author and academic. He promoted the German-Turkish Alliance (1908-1914) and founded the German Turkish Association in 1912. He became professor of Turkish history at the University of Berlin in 1914. Ernst Jäckh was a member of the diplomatic service during World War I and with Friedrich Naumann, he organized the liberal movement in Germany (1902-1912). Jäckh emigrated to Britain and held the position of international director of the New Commonwealth Institute until 1940 when he became Professor of Public Law and Government at Columbia University specializing in the politics of Germany the Balkans and the Middle East. He wrote books that include Albanian War, Der Austeigende Halbmonde, Background of the Middle East, Deutschland im Orient. First Edition.

Le carte di Albrizzi, derivanti dalle opere di Guillaulme de L’Isle, Iasaak Tirion, furono preparate per il suo Atlante Novissimo, che contiene tutte le parti del mondo del 1740 (volume 1) - 1750 (volume 2). Per le carte italiane l’Albrizzi utilizzò invece fonti diverse. Allo stesso tempo, furono utilizzate anche per illustrare Lo stato presente di tutti i paesi e popoli del mondo naturale, politico e morale con nuove osservazioni degli antichi e moderni viaggiatori. Scritto in inglese dal signor Salmon. Tradotto in Ollandese, e Francese, Tedescho ed ora in Italiano. In Venezia, Presso Giambattista Albrizzi MDCCXXXVII-MDCCLVI (1737-66), opera - in ventisette volumi – traduzione italiana dell’opera di Thomas Salmon Modern history, or the present state of all nations, che apparve tra il 1725 e il 1739 a Londra in 32 volumi. Giambattista Albrizzi fa parte di una famiglia di tipografi ed editori veneziani di origine bergamasca. Iniziatore dell'attività tipografica fu, negli ultimi decenni del XVII secolo, Girolamo Albrizzi a cui successe il figlio Giambattista, attivo particolarmente nel ventennio 1730-50.
