8vo, harcover in dj, 360pp. This book examines hostage-taking in ancient Rome, which was a standard practice of international diplomacy. Hundreds of foreign hostages, typically adolescents, were detained as the empire grew in the Republic and early Principate. As prominent figures at the center of diplomacy and as 'exotic' representatives of the outside world, they drew considerable attention in Roman literature and other artistic media. Our sources discuss hostages in terms of the geopolitics that motivated their detention, as well as in accordance with other comparable structures of power. Hostages, thus, could be located in a social hierarchy, a family network, in a cultural continuum, or in a sexual role. In these schemes, an individual Roman, or Rome in general, becomes not just a conqueror, but also a patron, father, teacher, or generically male. By focusing on the characterizations of hostages in Roman culture, we glean Roman attitudes toward ethnicity and imperial power.

This volume interrogates this cultural phenomenon and by doing so brings it into the mainstream of ancient history and archaeology. Focusing on different approaches to and interpretations of graffiti from a variety of sites and chronological contexts, Baird and Taylor pose a series of questions not previously asked of this evidence, such as: What is graffiti, and how can we interpret it? What ways, and with whom, do graffiti communicate? To what extent does graffiti represent or subvert the cultural values of the society in which it occurs? By comparing themes across time and space in the ancient world, the authors are able to define and contextualize graffiti, and provide a series of interpretative strategies for scholars and students of the ancient world.Ancient graffiti range from texts and images written or drawn both inside and outside buildings, in public and private places, to those on monuments in the city and on mountains in the countryside; what unites them conceptually is that they can be seen as actively engaging with their environment in a variety of ways. This book explores these engagements and demonstrates how differences of scale and spatial dynamics can be negotiated, and as such will be essential reading for Classical archaeologists and historians alike

Bodnar gives this account of his name (page xx, n.1) : "Called Cyriacus in Latin, German, and sometimes in English; Cyriaque in French; and Ciriaco de' Pizzecolli in Italian. È immediato riconoscere che molto di quanto scritto è da aggiornare e, forse, in alcune sue parti, da modificare. Così com'è il destino di ogni opera scritta di fronte al rinnovarsi delle conoscenze e delle relative critiche. L'analisi, archeologica e storiografica, delle città della Sicilia antica è organizzata in maniera del tutto simile al precedente volume sulla Magna Grecia. La particolare cultura siceliota presenta due tratti che si considerano fondamentalmente diversi da quelli propri della parte peninsulare. Il primo è costituito dalla permanente presenza delle genti indigene: che giungono a fondare una città "alla greca", con tanto di oracolo di fondazione. Situazione mai documentata in Magna Grecia. Il secondo tratto consiste nella particolare forma istituzionale dominante in Sicilia per ampia diacronia: la tirannide. Non sconosciuta sul continente, essa tuttavia non incide sulla storia complessiva delle città peninsulari come invece accade per quelle insulari. È per volontà dei tiranni che le sorti delle greche di Sicilia si intrecciano con quelle dell'Opicia, dell'Etruria propria e di quella adriatica, dell'Epiro, di Cartagine. Il continuo rinnovarsi degli studi, realizzati da scienziati provenienti da tutto il mondo, rende la ricerca sulla Sicilia greca una delle più attrezzate palestre per costringersi alla necessità di un continuo aggiornamento e di una sempre vigile attenzione critica. Nella realizzazione di questo volume ci si è sforzati di mantenersi ricettivi alle novità ed attenti ad inserirle nello sconfinato campo delle precedenti acquisizioni.
