Apart from the wealth of important finds which it has yielded this cemetery on a ridge north of the Bronze Age settlement and modern village is probably the most complete and interesting one of prehistoric date that has ever been explored in Crete. It also had a remarkably long life with burials covering the Early and Middle Minoan periods and much of the Late Minoan as well.

==============================================================

IMPORTANT: The price does NOT include the shipping cost which depends on actual weight and destination. 2006044235Oxford: Archaeopress 2006 Book. New. Soft cover. First Thus. On August 2nd 1877 the English explorer and archaeologist James Theodore Bent married an extraordinary Irishwoman Mabel Virginia Anna Hall-Dare .and within a few months they had embarked on their pattern of annual travels that continued until his early death in 1897. Their trips began fairly close to home visiting northern Italy but by 1883 they were in the Eastern Mediterranean in modern Greece and Turkey searching out the antiquities landscapes and lifestyles of a region that was to captivate them for the next fifteen years. Their researches led to a number of highly regarded monographs papers and articles such as Theodores 'The Cyclades or Life Among the Insular Greeks' 1885 and the many publications of their various discoveries in locations such as Rugged Cilicia the island of Thassos and elsewhere that were to place the couple securely amongst the foremost British travellers of the latter half of the 19th century. The publication therefore of Mabel Bents personal notebooks from the archive of the Joint Library of the Hellenic and Roman Societies London represents the discovery of a lost and notable milestone for scholars and travel enthusiasts of all kinds. This series of volumes begins with Mabels account of the couples adventures around the Aegean and beyond extracted from her fifteen-year sequence of notebooks and presented chronologically. Specifically we follow Mabel and Theodore to the Greek mainland and the islands known now as the Cyclades and the Dodecanese as well as the northern Aegean islands; their journeys along the Turkish littoral lead them from bustling Istanbul to provincial Mersin in the far south-west.363p. illus maps index. 2004040692New York: Pella Publishing Company 2004 Book. New. Soft cover. First Edition. "'Greeces twentieth-century history not unlike that of a large portion of the rest of Europe has been marked by frequent wars economic underdevelopment deep political fissures political clientelism and frequent as well as competing foreign intervention in the country's domestic affairs. In political science terms the countrys democratic system was less than consolidated in the sense that it was marked by frequent military intervention in politics. This book reconstructs Greeces melancholy political landscape during the dark years of the colonels dictatorship. The author conducted scores of interviews with prominent political figures e.g. Constantine Karamanlis Andreas Papandreou Panayiotis Kanellopoulos Constantine Mitsotakis Mikis Theodorakis Georgios Mavros Archbishop Makarios and former King Constantine. He also met with some functionaries representing the Greek junta and with a number of American diplomats. These interviews recorded over thirty years ago mirror the attitudes and mentalities of political protagonists of that time and could be treated as primary source material for historians who still need to produce a detached and dispassionate record of those trying times." 344p. index. 1995044249New York: Aperture 1995 Book. Illus. by Jodice Mimmo Photographer;. New. Hardcover. First Edition. "Mimmo Jodice one of Italy's finest photographers has set out like a modern Odysseus on an epic journey that he describes as "a voyage in search of the past." The result "Mediterranean is Jodice's most personal and significant undertaking to date. Not content merely to document archaeological sites and artifacts Jodice has aimed to rediscover a sense of the Classical universe presenting it in a vivid and original way. From Italy France Spain Greece Macedonia Turkey Tunisia Syria and Jordan Jodice's luminous photographs evoke a vision of Mediterranean civilization that is a conflation of history and mythology. His dramatic yet ethereal images refuse both classical and contemporary boundaries in a fusion of the topographical and the intimate. Ruined temples lost cities heroic landscapes gods and goddesses vistas of Vesuvius and of the omnipresent sea transcend the constraints of their historical context in terms of both time and space. At the same time Mimmo Jodice's artful darkroom interventions give these images a renewed energy one that is born of the present material world but which seems sustained by loftier more elusive mysteries. He begins with black-and-white negatives and then works in the darkroom to create the simultaneous presence of a multiplicity of tones. Jodice's treatment of the photographic paper gives the images a suggestion of movement-- they vibrate with the sense as he puts it that "everything is fleeting and somewhat impregnable." Jodice's deeply original work reveals not only an experimental creative process but also an informed and unique vision addressing a subject matter-- archaeology-- that has never before been consideredin this way. His particular interpretations of such Classical icons remind of the continuing impact of the Mediterranean world on our present lives and reinstill a sense of epic of adventure of wonder and even of providence-- all so often missing in contemporary culture. Jodice provides us with a vision of the Mediterranean that is rich and vast letting symbolic images become links between the experience of diverse peoples and between ourselves and our distant ancestors. "Mediterranean" includes essays by distinguished Yale University art historian George Hersey and renowned Slavic writer and scholar Predrag Matvejevic. Published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name at The Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1995 which travelled throughout the world. Exceptional untouched copy still in original shrink wrap. Beautifully printed and bound fine photographs. 110p. Aperture hardcover
