20087336Oxbow Books. 2008. Hardcover. Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. 328 pages; This book has come out of a project that pioneered and is continuing to pioneer the in-depth application of state of the art scientific analyses to ceramic artefacts and skeletal material. The vases and skeletons of Bronze Age Greece which are the subjects of this comprehensive study do not appear as they do in their usual format - illustrations in a book with descriptions of contexts. In this project and therefore in this book each object is revealed from the inside and because of this it has a different story to tell - what people ate and drank in everyday life the diet and health of the people who lived in Bronze Age Greece. By means of organic residue and stable isotope analysis knowledge has been extended beyond anything previously gleaned through normal archaeological research. There are some fascinating insights such as the origin of modern Greek retsina which was traced first to the time of Agammemnon then to Crete in the 17th century BC and finally to the Early Minoan Period c. 2000 BC. The results of this ground breaking project have been presented in 7 international exhibitions starting with the National Archaeological Museum in Athens in 1999. It is the most widely travelled exhibition of Greek artefacts ever mounted. This volume gives the reader the ultimate "story within the story": the primary scientific evidence behind the work that has been carried out up to 2003. It has been written by the world renowned scientists who carried out the work. . 1842172387 . Oxbow Books hardcover

20045267Routledge. 2004. Hardcover. Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. 224 pages; This book provides a detailed picture of the life of these Greek mercenaries analyzing who they were and from what section of society they came. It explores their motivations their relationships and connections both with each other and those with whom they served and shows how mercenaries were recruited paid and maintained. Matthew Trundle reviews a variety of evidence including Xenophon's detailed account of how over ten thousand Greeks tried and failed to establish the Persian prince Cyrus on his brother's Imperial throne the fragments of a fourth century play about the first ever soldier of fortune and inscriptions prohibiting Athenians from taking service with their neighbours. The result is a fresh look at the significance of mercenaries in ancient Greek society economy and politics and their part in the process that shaped the great Empire of Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic world. . 0415338123 . 1927208311927. Photo album documenting a multi country group यातà¥à¤°à¤¾ in 1927 records interwar travel across southern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean including regions under colonial administration and recent political transition. The album follows a group of travelers moving from France through Italy Greece Turkey British administered Palestine and Egypt capturing urban landmarks archaeological sites and local populations encountered along the route. The sequence provides visual evidence of tourism infrastructure mobility and cross cultural observation during a period when former imperial territories such as Constantinople were undergoing redefinition following the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of modern nation states.

Album contains 93 black and white silver gelatin photographs and four real photo postcards with images ranging approximately from 2.5 x 4 inches to 3.5 x 5.5 inches and one larger group photograph measuring about 9 x 7 inches. Photographs are mounted on black paper boards with handwritten captions in white pencil and interleaved tissue guards; string bound in patterned cloth boards. The album opens in Avignon with views of St. Pierre's Church and the Palais des Papes then continues through Italy with scenes of Naples and Pompeii as well as shipboard images captioned S.S. Adriatic. Subsequent sections include Athens with views of the Parthenon followed by Constantinople where four postcards depict the harbor the Sultan Ahmed Mosque and the Hagia Sophia shortly after the end of the Ottoman Empire. In British Mandate Palestine images show street scenes in Nazareth and Jerusalem including sites along the River Jordan the Western Wall and the Garden of Gethsemane alongside a captioned portrait labeled "A Jewish Maiden." The album concludes in Egypt with extensive views of archaeological and urban sites at Thebes Memphis Cairo and Luxor including the Obelisk of Hatshepsut Edfu Temple the tomb of Amenhotep II the Colossi of Memnon and the pyramids and Great Sphinx at Giza where the final group portrait shows the travelers posed on camels.

Produced during the interwar period the album reflects expanding international tourism networks alongside ongoing European influence in the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. The juxtaposition of ancient sites modern transport and local populations situates the material within broader histories of archaeology empire and travel culture in the early twentieth century. Light general wear to album and mounts; images well preserved with clear captions; overall very good condition. unknown

A few cellotape stains to inner covers else Book is VG.; 1.25 x 9.5 x 6.5 Inches; 376 pages; The city of Memphis on the Nile which had often served as capital in the long period preceding Egypt's conquest by Alexander the Great became the country's "second city" following the founding of Alexandria. Drawing on archaeological findings and on an unusual combination of Greek and Egyptian evidence Dorothy Thompson examines the city's economic life and the character of its multi-racial society in the era from Alexander to Augustus. Memphis under the Ptolemies will interest students of intercultural relations and will be essential reading for Egyptologists papyrologists and historians of the Hellenistic world including those concerned with religion. The relationship of the native population with the Greek-speaking immigrants is illustrated in Thompson's analysis of the position of Memphite priests within the Ptolemaic state. Egyptians continued to control mummification and the cult of the dead; the undertakers of the Memphite necropolis were barely touched by things Greek. The cult of the living Apis bull also remained primarily Egyptian; yet on death the bull deified as Osorapis became Sarapis for the Greeks. Within this god's sacred enclosure the Sarapieion is found a strange amalgam of Greek and Egyptian cultures. . 0691035938 . Princeton University Press hardcover
