Την εικόνα αυτή την υφαίνουν ποικίλες Ï€Ïοσεγγίσεις: οι εμπειÏικÎÏ‚ χαÏτογÏαφήσεις των εμποÏευόμενων ναυτικών οι λόγιες εξακÏιβώσεις των κοσμογÏάφων οι χαÏτογÏαφικÎÏ‚ Ï€ÏακτικÎÏ‚ των μηχανισμών της αποικιακής εξάπλωσης. Οι Ï€Ïοσεγγίσεις αυτÎÏ‚ λειτουÏγοÏν ταυτόχÏονα και συμπληÏώνουν η μία την άλλη. ÎœÎσα από αυτÎÏ‚ αναδÏονται τα επάλληλα δίκτυα που οÏίζουν την ενότητα του χώÏου καθώς και η σÏνθετη αλληλεπίδÏαση της οικονομίας της πολιτικής και της ιστοÏίας στη διαμόÏφωση της γεωγÏαφικής οπτικής. Και όχι μόνο όταν υπάÏχουν πλÎον αποδείξεις ότι από νωÏίς το Αιγαίο διαδÏαμάτιζε το Ïόλο του κÎντÏου Î¼ÎµÏ„Î±Î¾Ï Ï„Ïιών ηπείÏων». Στο εισαγωγικό σημείωμά του ο ΓιώÏγος Τόλιας επισκοπεί τη διαδοχή των θαλασσινών κοινοπολιτειών του Αιγαίου μÎσα στον ιστοÏικό χÏόνο.
