Verso la metà del IV secolo l'imperatore Giuliano nei "Cesari", una singolare opera satirica, ma dalle forti connotazioni personali, in cui sono passati in rassegna, con Alessandro Magno, i suoi principali predecessori, dà di Augusto una definizione peculiare: era un "camaleonte". Non è da sottovalutare questo giudizio da parte di una personalità come Giuliano che, arrivato inaspettatamente all'età di trent'anni al potere supremo, aveva concepito un disegno profondamente innovatore dello Stato romano, in primo luogo in senso religioso, e che dimostrò particolare sensibilità per le strategie comunicative. In verità Augusto risulta una personalità difficile da valutare già per gli antichi e non stupisce che tanto articolate siano state le presentazioni che la sua figura ha conosciuto anche negli studi più recenti. Appartiene senza dubbio a quel genere di personaggi poliedrici dei quali non è facile delineare un ritratto fedele e di cui è lecito privilegiare un aspetto rispetto a un altro. Giuliano è sicuramente in difficoltà a dare un giudizio netto su una figura tanto multiforme come quella di Augusto, il cui carattere autentico risulta alla fine sfuggente, soprattutto se si vuole uscire da schemi precostituiti.

I saggi raccolti in questo volume forniscono invece una ricostruzione assai diversa, avvalorata soprattutto dai numerosi documenti epigrafici e papirologici di recente rinvenimento. Questi, grazie anche a un serio riesame delle fonti di tradizione manoscritta, contribuiscono alla demolizione dei più radicati luoghi comuni sulle vicende politiche dopo le Idi di marzo del 44 a.C., la persona di Augusto e la sua posizione istituzionale. Ma non solo. La documentazione complessiva mette anche in luce il profondo rapporto tra il princeps e uno dei protagonisti di quella infuocata e tragica fase della storia costituzionale di Roma, Marco Tullio Cicerone, tanto da poter definire il primo come il vero erede politico del secondo e autore di una nuova forma rei publicae in verità delineata nei celeberrimi trattati ciceroniani.
