In German. Uncommon in the US. / "Xenophon c. 430–354 BC was an ancient Greek philosopher historian soldier and student of Socrates. He is known for his writings on the history of his own times the late 5th and early 4th centuries BC and the age of the Peloponnesian War. His works provide a valuable source of information about Greek life and history during this period. One of Xenophon's most famous works is "Anabasis" which recounts his experiences as a Greek mercenary in Persia. The book tells the story of the March of the Ten Thousand a large army of Greek mercenaries hired by Cyrus the Younger who intended to seize the throne of Persia from his brother Artaxerxes II. When Cyrus was killed in battle the Greeks were stranded deep in Persian territory and had to fight their way out. Xenophon one of their leaders kept a detailed record of this journey. Xenophon's other significant works include "Hellenica" which is a history of Greece from 411 to 362 BC picking up where the historian Thucydides left off. His "Memorabilia" is a collection of Socratic dialogues that serve as a defense of Socrates presenting him as a moral thinker rather than a corrupter of youth as he was portrayed in his trial in Athens. Xenophon also wrote on many other topics including horsemanship hunting and the Spartan constitution." Chrestomathy selected literary passages. Druck und Verlang von Carl Gerold's Sonn hardcover
