Scarce large broadside from an early competitor to the American Telegraph and Telephone Company in New York City AT& T aimed at the independent telephone exchange manager and offering a free trial of the electric telephone patented by the company June 2nd 1896. <br /> <br /> Alexander Graham Bell made the first long distance phone call on August 10 1876 from his home in Brantford Ontario to his assistant located ten miles away. By 1878 Bell had set up the first telephone exchange in New Haven Connecticut was the home of the first telephone exchange which was established in 1878; connections were made between Boston Massachusetts and New York City by 1884. In 1885 American Telegraph and Telephone Company AT&T was formed; it dominated telephone communications for the next 100 years. Bell employees were instructed to bad mouth the U.S. telephone system to drive down stock prices of its competitors facilitating for Bell's acquisition<br /> <br /> George W. Sutton an independent inventor is named here both for the development of the Sutton microphone filed April 14 1896 and the Self Restoring drop patent May 17 1898. Sutton one of the best known independent telephone manufacturers in the east installed 100 lines in Columbia South Carolina and 700 each in Poughkeepsie and Newburgh NY.<br /> <br /> Central panel with offset printed illustrations of standing female nude with light emanating from her hands titled "Electricity Enlightening the World". At the top panel: "To the Independent Exchange manager"; around the central engraving topics include: about telephones in general about transmitters about switchboards self restoring drop patent and cut of calling key. Lower central is a picture of the Phoenix Company headquarters in New York at 93 Washington Street. <br /> <br /> 22 x 28". Some cracking on folds otherwise very good condition. Not recorded in OCLC. 1836502980The Baptist Mission Press for the General Baptist Missionary Society 1836. Paperback. VERY GOOD. 4.25 x 7'. Flyleaf 3 4-20 pp. double-colume text in Oriya with English titles. A single stab-stiched 12mo gathering. 'Society for Inquiry' in pen to flyleaf a bit of mild wear and light creases but otherwise surprisingly clean and fresh. A rare imprint unrecorded in OCLC and unmentioned in any literature available to us. Title page notes print run of 5000 copies likely distributed in the main to pilgrims on the road to Puri along with the 5 other Baptist Mission Press Cuttack tracts that are known and held by the British Library. Amos Sutton published the first English Grammar of the Odia Languange for the Baptist Mission Press in 1831 and was at work revising the Odiya Bible Translation for the press at the time of this pamphlet's publication. 18505291"Orissa and Its Evangelization" by Amos Sutton Missionary to Orissa. "Orissa" is an eastern Indian state on the Bay of Bengal known for its tribal cultures and its many ancient Hindu temples. 1850 1st edition; William Heath; Boston. The book features numerous illustrations many of which are full-page as well as 2 maps of the Mission at the front. "Interspersed with Suggestions Respecting the More Efficient Conducting of INDIAN MISSIONS." There is an "Unexplained Oriya Words" section at the front.<br /><br />Condition:<br />Clean covers; there are a few tiny white stain lines on the spine; tiny cloth tears at the top and bottom edges of the spine; small cloth tears at the corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice text pages with only some occasional foxing. The front end paper has an old name written in pen and a 4" strip with adhesive remnants as if something had been affixed then removed leaving some adhesive behind. There is a small piece of paper remnant on the rear pastedown. Overall the book is in very good condition. William Heath hardcover

Light browning to pages unmarked a very good copy of this extraordinary collection of illlustrations of abnormal growths in humans and animals.</p><p><strong>SIR JOHN BLAND SUTTON </strong>1855 - 1936 a British physician entered Middlesex Hospital London as a medical student and in 1884 was appointed to the staff of the hospital. He became successively Lecturer in Anatomy Assistant SurgeonSurgeon and finally in 1920 Consulting Surgeon. He was one of the first in that hospital to undertake abdominal operations in the early days of Listerian asepsis. In 1910 he was elected to the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons and in 1920 became president of the Royal Society of Medicine. Sir John contributed much to medical literature and was the author of several well known books including Tumours Innocent and Malignant offered here. In his work on tumours he endeavoured to set forth a classification on embryological principles and to illustrate his points by comparative pathology. In his interest in the lower animals and his love for scientific method Bland-Sutton suggests comparison with John Hunter.</p> Lea Brothers & Co. hardcover

Published by Order of the Governors and Committee of the Medical School. The Museum was founded in 1835 to maintain the collection of prpartaions of early Lectureres including Dr. Charles Bell and Dr. Sweatman who held the chair of Midwifery. This catalogue includes the work of A Special Committee to draw up regulations for the preservation of specimens and preparations and augmentation of the collection. Curators were appointed and the work of the Museum unfolded. In 1880 the offices of Curator and Pathologist were conbined a committee was appointed to create the first catalogue which revised and reorganized into a uniform plan with new descriptions for over 800 specimens. Also flat-signed by the author to the half title page.First edition.Rebacked with the cloth from the original boards and spine laid down.Illustrated with a monochrome frontispiece colour folding plate additional monochrome plate and twenty-three chromolithographic colour plates. Collated complete.This copy particularly charming for its multitude of paraphernalia relating to the book and its author. To the front of the work are both of the author's signed letters - one being a presentation letter dated January 22nd 1886 and the other referring to having sent a copy of Bell's Messenger into which the author's letter on technical education of agriculture implemented into schools. To the second letter is tipped-in a newspaper clipping from Daily News 1891. With a loosely inserted newspaper clipping of Martin Hope Sutton's obituary and a later printed version bound-in. With two slips loosely inserted pressed to which are real gathering of leaves and grass collected by acquaintance and author on dairy farming John Prince Sheldon. To the rear of the work are the publisher's review pamphlet of this work bound-in and an article clipped from The Times dated 22nd December 1905. Two more of Sheldon's extracts inserted to the last two plates.A comprehensive volume on pastures including descriptions of the extension of pastures drainage of grass land cultural preparations sowing grass seeds after-management of new pastures hints on grazing and more followed by a selection of grasses and clovers.Written by Martin J. Sutton based on an essay published in the journal of the Royal Agricultural Society Vol. XXII. Part II written by Martin Hope Sutton author's father. Rebacked with the cloth from the original boards and spine laid down. Externally with damp staining to the lower edges of the boards. Mild rubbing to the extremities and a few other marks to the boards. Internally generally firmly bound. Half title and title leaves are loosening. Pages are bright and generally clean. A mixture of lessons teacher instruction school management and a few mss hymns by Edith and George Lane in 3 text books measuring between 9 and 8.2 x 7.3 and 6.5 inches.
