Promovirt 1855 widmete er sich der Ophthalmologie habilitirte sich 1864 und wirkte seit 1867 als außerordentlicher seit 1874 als ordentlicher Professor dieses Faches und Director der Universitäts-Augenklinik in Tübingen bis zu seinem am 22. Juli 1895 erfolgten Ableben. Seine hervorragendsten Publikationen sind: „Das Sehen mit zwei Augen etc." 1861; „Die Refractions- und Accommodations-Anomalien des Auges“ 1866; „Die Behandlung der Amaurosen und Amblyopien mit Strychnin“ 1871 und weitere entsprechende Beiträge zu Graefe's und Saemisch's Handbuch.
