The guides often referred to simply as "Baedekers" a term sometimes used to refer to similar works from other publishers or travel guides in general contain among other things maps and introductions; information about routes and travel facilities; and descriptions of noteworthy buildings sights attractions and museums written by specialists. Ernst Baedeker died unexpectedly on 23 July 1861 of sunstroke in Egypt and his younger brother Karl assumed charge of the publishing house. Each is richly illustrated and in original binding decorated with gilt lettering and marbled page edges.Volume 1 features 10 folding colour maps 6 monochrome plates 9 further colour plates 1 double-sided monochrome plate 1 double sided in both colour and monochrome and 1 double sided with a folding leaf.Volume 2 an uncommon first edition includes 1 monochrome folding plate 11 folding colour maps and 19 further colour plates many of which are double page spreads. Map between pp.105-106 loose but with no damage.Volume 3 - a very scarce 1894 edition of this work - features 6 folding colour maps 20 further colour plates many of which are double-page spreads and an additional double sided colour plate.Volume 2 text block is loose from binding but slotted inside. Bound in original red cloth. Externally smart. The odd marks to boards. Slight fading to spines. Vol2 covers detached. Front hinge of vol1 starting but firm. Rear hinge of vol3 starting but firm.
