1891109227London: Hodder and Stoughton 1891. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London Hodder and Stoughton 1891. Octavo xii 440 pages plus a etched frontispiece portrait by H. Manesse. Cloth slightly flecked and rubbed; spine lightly sunned and creased; uncut top edge and the leaves adjacent to the boards a little foxed; two tiny punctures near the head of the rear cover; an excellent copy. The background to this biography of George Fife Angas 1789-1879 is not without interest and it is to be gleaned from the entry in the 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' on Henry Hussey 1825-1903 'evangelist millenarian printer and historian . Hussey's printing and publishing encouraged him to literary endeavours and in 1862 his entry in the Gawler Institute competition for a history of South Australia won the prize. To compile this work he had access to government archives and to the private papers of G.F. Angas. Through this introduction and possibly some mutual religious sympathies Hussey became Angas's secretary in 1865. Angas later acquired Hussey's manuscript and with help from the Angas family it was edited in England by Edwin Hodder and published in 1893. Hussey supported Angas's opposition to Roman Catholicism and their propaganda included the distribution of 2000 copies of Foxe's "Book of Martyrs" and the organizing of a successful petition against precedence for prelates. This experience of public debate led Hussey to stand for Encounter Bay in the House of Assembly in 1874 but he incurred the displeasure of some of his religious followers and withdrew before the poll. After Angas died in 1879 Hussey was authorized to gather material for his biography which was also edited by Hodder and published in England in 1891. Hussey's autobiography refers to many diaries and private papers of Angas which do not seem to have survived'. Provenance: Geoffrey Ingleton with the G. & N. Ingleton bookplate and the Ingleton Collection catalogue stamp and number 1436 on the recto of the rear flyleaf. Ferguson 10473 noting an erratum slip. Hodder and Stoughton hardcover

1918108521At Sea: The Societies as above 1918. Very Good. At Sea The Societies as above 10 August 1918. Folded horizontally with a few light creases elsewhere and occasional light foxing; overall in very good condition. Not surprisingly we can find no record of this most ephemeral item. 'Pte C. Spencer Smith' is written at the head of the first page. The service record of 55891 Cecil Spencer Smith indicates that he hailed from the Adelaide suburb of Hindmarsh enlisted on 8 February 1918 'Embarked for Active Service . HMAT "Orontes" Sydney 5-6-18 Disembarked Liverpool 11-8-18'. This Final Reunion must have been quite a party; all nine entertainments listed on the programme are preceded by a toast. This might be related somewise to the instruction printed at the foot of the first page: 'Guests are requested to bring the Lid of their Mess Tin with them'. The Societies, as above] unknown
194179998Adelaide: 'Printed and Published At "the Horace Walpole Press"' The Author 1941. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Adelaide 'Printed and Published At "the Horace Walpole Press"' The Author 1941. Octavo v first two blank 5 last two blank 484 pages. Overlapping limp cloth with a paper title-label on the spine; covers slightly marked bumped and indented with marginal pinpricks to the front cover and the first 60 or so pages; endpapers offset with the rear one marked; overall a very good copy of an indifferent production meaning the pinpricks are probably 'as-issued'!. Inscribed 'To Eric & Jean McLaughlin with the Compliments & Best Wishes of F.E. Rogers Xmas /41'. The book was hand-set and printed by the author who apologizes in the preface for the many errors present. 'These errors are due I think mainly to composing much of the matter without an intervening manuscript stage' - no mean feat! Frederick Edward Rogers 1865-1947 was an English doctor. He recounts in his memoirs that 'In 1923 my health being indifferent my wife and I and two younger daughters set sail for Adelaide South Australia where we joined our second girl who had married a Digger'. We have previously sighted an obituary that mentioned that a second volume of memoirs was published in 1945; Farmer does not record this in 'Private Presses and Australia' 1972 and the supplement in 1976. 'Printed and Published At "the Horace Walpole Press"' [The Author] hardcover
109232The Hundred of Kappakoola sic derived from Kappakoola Hill near Wudinna on the Eyre Peninsula is the best we can do to give this item some context. 1900128025Unley: Chas P. Scott 1900. Very Good. Unley Chas P. Scott circa 1900s. A sepia-toned postcard-format gelatin silver photograph 138 × 87 mm blind-stamped with the photographer's details 'Chas P. Scott Unley S.A.'; the caption is inkstamped at the head of the recto and the verso is printed for use as a postcard. Tiny surface chip and crease to the top right-hand corner-tip; in excellent condition. Charles Scott 1878-1928 is 'Listed as photographer at 21A Waymouth Street Adelaide in directories from 1909 to 1915 his "private residence" being given as 10 Grace Street Goodwood Park' Photohistory SA website. The Art Gallery of SA gives the date '1903-04' for this image in its collection; this example with the address in Unley an Adelaide suburb near Goodwood Park would appear to have been produced prior to Scott's relocation to Waymouth Street. <p>The Adelaide 'Chronicle' for 8 September 1932 quotes a letter from F.W. Marsh formerly of Oodnadatta reminiscing about this portrait a copy of which hung 'in the strangers' room at Tattersalls Club. Well Jacky Rags when about three years old came with two other black boys early one morning to my place in Oodnadatta. When I asked what they wanted I was told that his father Charlie had killed his mother that night with a boomerang and that Jacky had come to me for protection. I kept him for a long time but when he was about 15 years old he was persuaded to ask me to allow him to go for a spell meaning he wanted to go to the camp in the bush. I let him go and later found that the older blacks had performed certain ceremonies on him from which he never recovered. He developed consumption and died a year or so later. I think living on the whites' food for so many years and then going to the bush where those to be initiated are starved until they are very weak so that the ceremony can be performed easily led to his early death. The name Jacky Rags was given him because whatever clothes he received in a day or two they would be in rags. He was a good lad'. Chas P. Scott unknown

Full green morocco bordered and lettered in gilt by Sangorski & Sutcliffe; expertly sealed tear to the inner margin of the title leaf; in fine condition. The reviewer well-informed but facetious in the extreme engages almost entirely with James's book and shares some of his reservations about the planning and organisation of the fledgling colony of South Australia. He concludes: 'Mr James's book exposes all that is evil in the management of the experiment of colonizing on the new plan . and in order that both sides may be heard the reader may consult Mr Stephens's hypercritical and somewhat captious reply'.
