The Beltana Pastoral Company was a significant historical Australian pastoral enterprise founded by Thomas Elder and Robert Barr Smith It was famous for running vast sheep and cattle stations notably Beltana Station in South Australia and pioneering innovations such as on-site wool scouring at Cordillo Downs using camels and Afghan drivers for transport in the 1860s-80s. Contemporary full morocco; spine tooled in gilt; front cover extensively stamped in gilt with the design repeated in blind on the rear cover; all edges gilt and lightly marked; slight wear to the extremities now expertly conserved; marbled endpapers and adjacent leaves a little creased and marked; paper a little tanned; trifling signs of age and use; in excellent condition. The elaborate binding was likely executed by Emanuel Spiller the South Australian Government Printer at the time. Spiller's name appears as exhibitor and jury-member of competitions and exhibitions of binding and printing throughout the 1880s. The 'Sydney Mail and New South Wales Advertiser' for 27 March 1880 carries a lengthy article by John Plummer on colonial bookbindings displayed at the Sydney International Exhibition noting that '. in the South Australian Court Mr. E. Spiller the Government printer of Adelaide occupies the foremost rank'. <p>Although offered primarily as a fine example of colonial binding the Acts contained in this volume numbers 196 to 238 as well as nine Private Acts are not without interest. There are numerous railways and tramways acts as well as acts on subjects as diverse as Chinese immigration the Adelaide Synagogue mining inebriates and the substantial 'No. 237. A handsome hand colored copper engraving of an Australian falcon perched on a branch from Latham's 'General Synopsis of Birds'. <br /> <br /> Dr. John Latham 1740 - 1847 the leading British ornithologist of his time was a founding member of the Linnean Society and through his work with the society became acquainted with the leading naturalists and collectors of the day. Many specimens and drawings of Australian birds were arriving in Britain following expeditions to Australia. Latham gave the first published descriptions and scientific names of Australian birds including the emu lyre bird magpie and white cockatoo. <br /> <br /> A good strong impression on paper with wide margins. The preface states that this book 'contains the various orders which have from time to time appeared in C.D.F. L. of C. and C.C.F. orders regarding D.M.T.'s; and also in circular memorandums from heads of departments in South Africa regarding District Mounted Troops. Fresh Orders must necessarily often be issued and spaces are left in the book for their insertion. H.S. Scott Harden Capt. O.C. Colonial Forces No. 12 Area. Aliwal North February 1st 1902'. Pages 43-44 contain a list of officers 'appointed by the colonial Government to command District Mounted Troops in the Areas not yet included in Colonial divisions'. This item is not identified as such but we know it comes from the dispersed collection of Samuel Albert White 1870-1954 the South Australian well-known as an ornithologist and conservationist but 'During the South African War he had two tours of duty and was temporarily promoted captain a title he used thereafter' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. Two early glass negatives one showing two Australian boxers Micko Walsh and Fred Segar and the second a portrait of their promoter Will Young.<br /> <br /> Walsh a.k.a. Welsh a Melbourne resident was born in 1871 debuted in 1892 and fought as a featherweight. He is listed as fighting 49 bouts and 286 rounds. Fred Segar a resident of Unley Adelaide debuted in 1921 as a welterweight. He boxed 21 bouts and 287 rounds retiring in 1931. His parents are listed as Frederick Segar and Rose Jackson BoxerRec.com<br /> <br /> The "Barrier Miner" newspaper Broken Hill NSW includes a "Boxing" summary 12 Jan 1922 stating that "'Red' Mitchell arrived by the express this morning. Since boxing Johnny Knowles here he has been engaged in bouts with Fred. Segar and Jonnny Mock. 'Micko' Walsh a champion featherweight boxer of Victoria is now in Adelaide. Walsh is suffering from paralysis. See NLA website<br /> <br /> The image of Will Young the promoter is quite self-aggrandizing. Titled "WILL" above and "Mr. W. Young.' below his portrait is surrounded by decorative border with a boxing glove and training gear motif. The other image is an oval portrait of the two boxers Walsh and Segar one seated the other standing. The date '1921' appears in the border of the image. <br /> Both have paper envelopes one labeled Will young Promotor sic and Micko Walsh & Fred Segar.<br /> <br /> Glass plates 6 1/2" x 4 3/4". Provenance: Dr Lance Walters Chief Brewer at the South Australian Brewing Co. from 1944 to the 1980s with his signature in the cloth-bound volumes and his ink emphases and annotations in the first volume. The occasional company inkstamp is also present along with a small typed paper label signed by Walters on one front cover: 'This book must not be removed from the laboratory without permission'. The SA Brewing Company's Thebarton brewery and the laboratory closed down in June 2021 and its demolition is almost complete as at October 2022. 3 items. 116506A cord-bound loose-leaf cloth album 230 × 340 mm containing 22 gelatin silver photographs generally 120 × 200 mm or the reverse with some a little smaller mounted on both sides of card album leaves with printed captions. The first plate is a composite group portrait of the then-current Adelaide City Councillors under the Lord Mayor Sir Wallace Bruce; the rest show the Royal couple arriving officiating and generally being feted plus some of the rare treats they witnessed or received. <p>The first photograph carries the blindstamp of Hammer a local studio; four others carry the blindstamp of Walter McNeill 41 Rundle Street Adelaide; the others are uncredited. Most of the prints have a little silvering-out near the edges; the album is a little rubbed at the extremities with the bottom corners bumped; ownership details on the front pastedown; the overall condition is excellent. unknown

The Duke in this case is Albert Frederick Arthur George 1895-1952 King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from 11 December 1936 until his death in 1952. He was the last Emperor of India and the first Head of the Commonwealth. The Duchess was Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon 1900-2002 the mother of Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret Countess of Snowdon. She was Queen consort of the United Kingdom and the Dominions from her husband's accession in 1936 until his death in 1952 after which she was known as Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother to avoid confusion with her daughter. 110463The photographs are a little uniformly faded with some unobtrusive tiny dark spots and minimal silvering-out; they are attractively presented in the original wooden frame with a gilt fillet behind the glass. The frame is lightly scuffed in places; it has a new hanging wire and backing tape but retains the original framer's label on the verso 'From K. Cameron Picture Framer and Mount Cutter Leigh St. Adelaide'. Two of these images heavily cropped to show only the horse were reproduced in 'The Observer' Adelaide 24 June 1905. The photographer is not identified. The Suffolk is a breed of draught horse nicknamed Punch because of its stocky appearance and power Hendricks: 'International Encyclopedia of Horse Breeds' 2007. unknown

A couple of light creases one affecting the right-hand margin of the image; a few small chips and tears at the edges well clear of the printed surface and easily matted out; in very good condition. An original large-format chromolithograph from John Ednie Brown's 'Forest Flora of South Australia' 1882-1890 numbered 26 in the bottom right-hand corner of the sheet. <p>From soon after publication Harcourt Barrett was confronted with a popular conception that Rosa Fiveash was wholly or principally responsible for the plates as published. Eventually enough became too much . 'The entire work as issued from the Government Printing Office consisted of nine parts each part containing five plates making a total of forty-five plates. Of these forty-five plates Miss Fiveash only supplied thirty-two drawings in watercolour of the centre or main branch only. Miss Camilla Hammond sketched the Banksia Ornata and Mrs Smart sketched the native cherry and it was from these sketches that the drawings upon stone were made. The remaining eleven plates and title page together with all the additional work consisting of the various woods barks seed-vessels botanical sections and details of the flowers were drawn direct upon the stones from photos and natural specimens wholly and solely by me during the time I held the position of Chief Lithographer at the Government Printing Office. And further I may state that not only did I make the drawings which consisted of forty-five outlines and 400 colour-stones but was held responsible by Mr Brown for their proper reproduction in all their natural colours a matter in which he was very particular' 'Evening Journal' 23 April 1900.
