187123255Sydney: Caxton Steam Machine Printing Office 1871. Wraps. Very good - condition. Scarce biographical booklet the only one on Ristori published in Sydney describing the life of the Italian actress Adelaide Ristori renowned as a tragedienne. Ristori visited Australia with a large Italian entourage for 4 months in 1875 performing in Ballarat Melbourne and Sydney and this booklet was likely published as a promotional piece for the tour.

This Australian booklet is not dated although Ferguson's Bibliography of Australia assigns a date ca. 1871. It was translated from Italian into English to be used as an advertising piece for Ristori's 1875 Australia tour. It was published at the Caxton printing office which was functioning under that name until 1876.

Adelaide Ristori 1822 - 1906 toured widely including Paris 1855 1856 London Madrid 1857 and the United States 1866. The booklet describes Ristori's American visits: the first tour was mainly in the North the events of the Civil War making a stop in New Orleans impossible. Ristori did eventually visit there reciting pieces at the grand bazaar following which she "had to accept a sumptuous supper which was attended by the leading people of the South headed by the generals Beauregard and Lee". p19.

In 1875 after one of her American tours she traveled to Australia where her company's lavish productions of historical drama were performed in Italian. Ristori performed the roles of Medea Mary Stuart and the title role in Elizabeth Queen of England written especially for her by Paolo Giacometti. Such was Ristori's popularity that in Victoria a company working several gold mines on the rich Berry Lead near Allendale north of Ballarat was named Ristori after her. This led to an adjoining town being named Ristori Town.

8vo 29pp. Printed glossy paper wrappers the title printed in black at front wrapper with "Adelaide Ristori" in an elaborate type font. Whenever I entered a crowd it closed around me like an octopus. I can still hear the shrill excited cry ‘I touched him!' If I were out of reach then a blow to my head with a folded newspaper appeared to satisfy the impulse". With floral border flag crests battleship. Color printed card 9 1/2 x 6 3/4". 1820201111820. An intriguing item. The image seems to be inspired by the anecdote related in James Boswell's book "Life of Johnson" where he describes Dr. Samuel Johnson in 1793 hopping around the room to explain to people how a kangaroo moved. The hand-penned caption below entitles it "Shade of a Dandy" the caricature poking fun of the ridiculousness of the gentleman with his frizzy hairstyle pointed nose and chin holding a monocle. He stands in the corner of a room and the shadow he casts on the wall looks like a kangaroo with a suggestion of a halter. The room has flower-decorated floor covering a border around the wall which also has a framed landscape hanging and a window with drapes behind him. Kangaroos have held a long fascination for the Northern hemisphere particularly after their arrival on English shores with Joseph Banks fresh from Cook's first voyage in 1769. The man's cut of coat and slim trousers suggest an early 19th century style. 7x10" on paper 8 x 10 3/8". With some later faintly bizarre coloring on the figure of the man in either pastel or crayon. Mounted on a larger sheet of blue paper perhaps from an early album. Blue backing sheet with a closed tear otherwise in very good condition. unknown
