Very scarce. 200 pages. Captain Samuel Albert White was a wealthy Australian racehorse owner soldier explorer conservationist and amateur ornithologist. He fought in the South African War 1900-1903 reaching the rank of Captain which title he continued to use throughout his life. He made several private ornithological collecting expeditions across remote areas of Australia to Alice Springs 1913 Musgrave and Everard Ranges 1914 Cooper Creek 1916 Nullarbor Plain 1917-1918 Finke River 1921 and Adelaide to Darwin and return 1922 on behalf of Gregory Mathews. He was a foundation member of the South Australian Ornithological Association SAOA in 1899 and served as its President for several periods between 1904 and 1944. He was also a foundation member of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union RAOU in 1901 and served as its President 1914-1916. . Very Good. 1st thus. Softcover. W.K. Thomas & Co paperback

20497First Edition. Paperback. Fine. Octavo 135 pages plus 40 plates 5 pages of scientific drawings and 2 maps. Original flush-cut quarter cloth and card covers; a fine copy. The expedition was under the leadership of R. Lockhart Jack; his concerns were primarily geological. White accompanied him in an unofficial capacity and the 'present notes deal mainly with the zoological and botanical objects noticed during the trip'. The party travelled by camel from Oodnadatta to the Everard and Musgrave Ranges from mid-June to the end of August 1914 during a period of prolonged drought. Approximately 29 pages and all of the plates are devoted to the narrative and the local Aborigines who appear in 16 of the plates. This is followed by scientific reports mainly on mammals birds spiders insects and botany. This issue also contains a major contribution by Bronislaw MALINOWSKI: The Natives of Mailu. Preliminary Results of the Robert Mond Research Work in British New Guinea 213 pages plus 17 plates. McLaren 16784. A popular account was published in book form in 1916 as 'In the Far North-West.
