Loosely inserted news-cutting "The Case for the Case" dated 19th September 1934 showing the casket made of local wood which will contain the Secession petition . which will be presented to the King by the Secession delegate". A beautifully bound copy in near fine condition. The 1934 'case for secession' failed and support for the Dominion League in the Western Australian community dwindled. The secession debate was reignited briefly in 1974 by mining magnate Lang Hancock with the formation of the Westralian Secession Movement. The movement was sparked in reaction to the centralist policy of the Whitlam Labor Government. However the movement failed to achieve prominence due to the strong economy at the time and disappeared as quickly as it emerged. Harrop 1st edition. Half leather. Blue cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and front cover a little marked and lightly worn; top edge gilt others uncut; folding map a little creased and torn with some clear tape repairs to the verso; mild signs of age and use; a very good copy. The author was 'Fourteen years Sub-collector of Customs at Port Darwin'. The six-page preface is by Ernest Whitington an Adelaide journalist. Provenance: 'Stephen King "Calta Wurlie" May 1908' is written in ink on the front free endpaper. Stephen King Jr 1841-1915 sketcher and surveyor accompanied John McDouall Stuart on the first transcontinental expedition in 1861-63. He later worked as a surveyor under George Goyder in Darwin and on the Overland Telegraph. Chapter XV: 'Stuart's Tree' has a dogear corner on leaf 275/6 which contains details of Stuart's graveside obelisk and makes reference to the Overland Telegraph: 'Survivors of the expedition to-day say that the telegraph scheme was constantly in the mind of the great explorer and he loved to predict that some of his party would live to see consummated the bridging of the continent not merely by telegraph but by railway'. King was the last survivor of the eleven members of this famous expedition. 'Calta Wurlie' was the name of King's house in the Adelaide suburb of Kensington; it still stands today. The novel deals with 'pioneering life in the Riverina and the dry country nearer the centre and though not cleverly constructed contains some authentic - and sometimes diverting - episodes of station life' Depasquale. Contemporary and possibly original quarter morocco ruled and decorated in gilt and cloth lettered in gilt; covers lightly rubbed at the extremities with the cloth lightly flecked and slightly sunned; thin line of white paint down most of the length of the narrow strip of cloth turned in at the leading edge of the front cover; an excellent copy. Dr Moritz Richard Schomburgk 1811-1891 was the director of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens at the time; in '1872 he was offered but refused the directorship of the Melbourne Botanic Gardens' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. The 'Handbook of South Australia' mentioned on the title page is the then yet-to-be-published work by William Harcus 'South Australia. Its History Resources and Productions'. <p>Two editions appeared in 1876: an unillustrated Adelaide edition in flush-cut quarter cloth and papered boards and an extensively-illustrated edition in cloth in London. Schomburgk's text appeared in both editions accompanied in the latter instance by 11 full-page engravings mainly of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. Ferguson 15497 not mentioning any of the above. W.C.
