A very well illustrated account that focuses on the native peoples and natural history of this 1928-29 expedition through Panama, Galapagos Island, Marquises, Tahiti, New Hebrides, New Guinea, Borneo, etc. The 32,000 mile expedition carried out numerous scientific studies, from cannibals in New Guinea to natural history, collecting thousands of specimens for the Chicago Field Museum. The colored plates and drawings are by Walter A. Weber, the photos are mainly by the author.

Young man's journal of a trip from New York to Melbourne Australia. He records a relatively calm and uneventful passage lasting just over three months. Though dreadfully seasick for the first week or two he eventually gains his sea legs and stomach and enjoys an easy if lengthy voyage. His activities aboard ship include fishing and shooting at birds with the captain as well as learning navigation and astronomy from the mate. unknown books

A picture of this book is available upon request by email. Shelford, who was curator of the Sarawak Museum and with Oxford University Museum, was an entomologist by training, made expeditions into the interior of Borneo to study the head-hunting tribes and the natural history. The book contains detailed chapters on natural history, birds, insects, mimicry in nature, animal life of the shores, natives of Borneo, reptiles, etc. Very nicely illustrated, including of a head hunting expedition, buildings in Sarawack, Kuching. The work was edited from the manuscript & notes by Edward Poulton after Sheldon's early death due to a tropical disease.
