1964815D15New York: Simon and Schuster 1964. First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good. 10.5" by 8.5". Various; Danny Lyon. A first edition copy of 'The Movement' a historical work documenting the African-American struggle for equality during the Civil Rights Movement prepared by the SNCC and written by Lorraine Hansberry. First edition first printing. In the original unclipped dust wrapper. This is a very important work which chronicles the inhumane struggles faced by the African-American community published at the height of political tension in 1964. With text written by Lorraine Hansberry this book highlights the 'struggle for the humanization of our country' documenting all aspects of the 'social revolution' from the 'dauntless good humor of a twelve-year-old girl in a Georgia jail' to the 'rage and hatred of a Ku Klux Klansman'. 'The Movement' was prepared with assistance from the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee or the SNCC.Written by Lorraine Hansberry 1930-1965 a playwright and writer who was the first African-American woman to have a play performed on Broadway titled 'Raisin in the Sun'. Hansberry also worked at the Pan-Africanist newspaper 'Freedom' helping to document the African struggle for liberation. With photographs by Danny Lyon an American photographer and filmmaker who was the main photographer for the SNCC and was present for almost all of the major historical events during the Civil Rights Movement. Additional photographs by Bob Adelman Don Charles Frank Dandridge Roy De Carava William DuBois and many more.Collated complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally excellent with just a bit of fading to the margins of boards and the spine. Dust wrapper is smart with just some slight edge wear chipping and some loss particularly to the top edge of the spine region. Wrap is lightly age-toned with a few marks. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout as are the illustrations. Near Fine Simon and Schuster hardcover
174720078The Hague 1747. Engraved frontispiece and 23 full-page engraved plates. Contemporary mottled calf spine and labels gilt edges marbled blue. Old signatures on the titles. A very nice set. A mechanistic and scientific approach to dowsing and magnetism the first French book published on the subject. Here the author attempts to remove occultism from the practice by posturing that the circulating corpuscles of the human body communicate with underground water sources through the divining rod as an extension of the arms much like the eyes make use of microscopes and telescopes to see things unavailable to the naked eye. Vallemont goes on to suggest other applications of the divining rod such as locating dead bodies and rooting out fugitives. The fine illustrations show proper ways of holding the rod other dowsing equipment and divinatory charts. Volume II concludes with a catalog of successful dowsing excursions and a compilation of astrological charts that provide the correct conditions for finding specific things. <br /> Caillet 10987; Dupré Silent Messengers: The Circulation of Material Objects of Knowledge 308-309. unknown
