First editions of this uncommon set tracing the engineering and construction efforts by Vuignier 1798-1865 noted Parisian engineer to develop and expand the warehouse docks canal locks and canal infrastructure of the Canal de l’Ourcq into the Bassin de la Villette the largest artificial lake in Paris constructed under the reign of Napoleon I. Vuigner had not only overseen the construction of the original grain warehouse docks to feed Paris with the newly created canal link but from 1839-1840 was the original general manager of the Ourcq Canal Concession who designed and oversaw the construction of the five locks connecting the Canal de l’Ourcq into the Bassin de la Villette solving the severe sloping issue. As part of the development works carried out by Napoleon III and Baron Haussmann Vuigner oversaw the upgrading of the warehouse docks along the canals connecting to the Canal de l’Ourcq in order to solve water flow and depth issues of the Pont de Flandre and the Quai de la Gironde which are depicted here in drawings as are improved pumps and mechanisms for the locks. Two of the original warehouses survived at the end of the Bassin de la Villette and later converted into artists lofts but now they have been replaced by the MK2 cinema complexes and the areas in and around the Bassin and Canals have become thriving and popular outdoor areas. 198625231
New York:: Viking 1986. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine copy in a Very Good plus unclipped dust jacket with sunning to the spine and the top edge of the front panel. Seigel has written an important work one which monitors the development of an extraordinary counterculture through all its evolutions and ambiguities during a constantly changing period of French history. Bohemian Paris was of course a uniquely creative entity; its art ideas literature and lifestyles influenced and were influenced by the bourgeois world that was simultaneously taking shape. Seigel combines a sophisticated command of French history with an authoritative understanding of those who populated Bohemian Paris e.g. Courbet Rimbaud Zola and Cocteau. Though not an easy book this represents a major contribution to social and intellectual history.
Viking, hardcover

1867List01217Boston Paris: J.P. Whitney 1867. First Edition Thus. . 8vo publisher’s green cloth 107 pp. Some tearing and fraying to boards particularly at head of spine text block excellent very good minus overall. Very Good. The scarce Paris Universal Exposition edition of J.P. Whitney’s early title on the silver mines of Colorado. Whitney a wealthy sportsman from Boston with investments in Colorado traveled as the sole commissioner from Colorado to the Paris Universal Exposition in an effort to entice foreign investment in the mining industry which was suffering from a poor reputation as the costs of extraction grew higher. Whitney had published this title in pamphlet form a year earlier. Whitney shipped his own collection of Colorado minerals to France where it was the most extensive of any of the North American regions to be displayed receiving a gold medal from Napoleon III. A new title on Colorado minerals Colorado in the United States of America: Schedule of Ores Contributed by Sundry Persons to the Paris Universal Exposition of 1867 With Some Information about the Region and its Resources. Whitney also brought with him copies of his pamphlet in a special hardcover edition which we offer here. This is the second example we find on the market. Whitney would gain great popularity in Colorado for his efforts which did much to improve its standing. J.P. Whitney unknown
1856G5DC4C01U79OParis: Arthus-Bertrand printed by Becquet frères 1856. Later half blue cloth portfolio patterned white silk sides printed in blue in period style printed spine label. 1mo 63 x 46 cm. An album of views most including ships on the river from the Battle of Kinburn in the Crimean War comprising 17 plates: 1 tinted lithographed title-page 15 tinted and double-tinted lithographed views image size 30 x 46 cm and a lithographed map. Many views also coloured by hand. A rare lithographic print series commemorating the Battle of Kinburn Kil-Bouroun on the south bank of the Dnieper River near the Crimea. On 17 October 1855 during the Crimean War the French and British navies attacked the Russian outpost there with a fleet of ironclad ships destroying the fortifications within hours and suffering only light damage. This decisive success seven years before the famous battle of the Monitor and the Merrimack in the American Civil War heralded the demise of the traditional wooden warship. Though made from the land mostly after the battle itself nearly all show maritime scenes with large and detailed depictions of the ironclad ships on the ice-bound river. They also show the ruined fortifications in great detail. With some marginal tears repaired but still in very good condition with only an occasional minor spot. The portfolio is also very good with a couple small water stains on the silk of the front board. A lovely series of views of ironclad ships on the frozen Dnieper River during the Crimean War.l Collection De Vinck 17202-17206 17209 17211-17221; WorldCat 4 copies.
