Very faint stamp to the title page. John Ayrton Paris 1785-1856 was a British physician and a medical researcher of distinction. He made one of the earliest observations of occupational causes of cancer when in 1822 he recognised that the high rate of skin cancer among men working in copper-smelting in Cornwall and Wales was due to their exposure to arsenic fumes. He wrote a number of substantial medical books including this one which focuses on diet and digestion. A page of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In a cloth library binding. Externally smart with some wear to the extremities and the joints. There is small loss to the head of the spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are clean but there is some offsetting throughout.
