1964ABE-1289925424George Braziller New York 1964 Limited Edition of 3013 copies printed on a wonderful rough surfaced Italian Fabriano paper. This is the true first and is suffused with a gravitas that reflects the time so shortly after the murder of President Kennedy. Bound in white coarse textured cloth board the black titling is indented on the cover and spine. Art Lettering and Preface by Ben Shahn using the poem by Wendell Berry. Printed by The Meriden Gravure Company of Connecticut. Bound by Haddon Craftsmen of Scranton Pennsylvania. A Ben Shahn original colour lithograph is tipped in by hand near the back of the book. The black cloth slipcase has the title panel on the front. This is printed on thick white paper leaving an indented plate mark around it which looks both superb and very distinctive. No jacket as issued this is an elegiac work that combines artist and writer in a common concern words and drawings to commemorate the slaying of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. The poem originally appeared in The Nation as "November 26 1963" the day it appeared in the magazine just four days after President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas Texas on November 22 1963. People all over the world remember what they were doing; this has become a cliche but it remains true. Wendell Berry's poem stunned Shahn and he wrote:"I found it extraordinarily moving. It was right in every way; it was modest and un-rhetorical. When I read the poem I wanted it preserved read not lost in the pages of last week's magazine. I turned it into this book accompanied by the images it invoked for me. I have hoped in some small way to help monumentalize those days so that we may not so soon become inured to an unacceptable violence a failure a profound sadness" This limited edition is prominently signed by Wendell Berry and Ben Shahn. Few of these limited editions in their slipcase are available online: this one is clean and tight and scarce signed thus. Thirteen mono plates and one original tipped-in colour print. The signatures are at the end of the book on a special page. This project was initiated by Shahn and typically he has lettered the entire poem in his highly characteristic style. This is a superb example of modern graphic art produced by a classic small press. Finally it is important to mention that the artist has also contributed a thoughtful preface.
