Armorial bookplates of Tompkins Vols 2 and 3 and name J C Tompkins top right of blanks at start 1-3 and Edward Tompkins top of title page 4. V1-3 bound in old full leather V4 in brown half leather and cloth. Spines with raised bands are lettered on twin title labels and decorated in gold. Spines all match and it appears that 1-3 have been rebacked to match 4 which is not rebacked. Some spotting throughout heavier mostly to early and late leaves and text edges. Spines are all scuffed and worn as are board edges and corners plus some light shelf wear and scoring to front and rear on each. A very scarce complete two volume edition of Mary Berry's comparative study of the social condition of life in both England and France prior to the Revolution. A 'New Edition' complete in two volumes. In handsome morocco bindings.With a frontispiece to volume I.Her most famous work Berry published the first volume in 1828 under the title 'A Comparative View of the Social Life of England and France from the Restoration of Charles the Second to the French Revolution' and a second volume in 1931 titled 'Social Life in England and France from the French Revolution in 1789 to that of July 1830'.Berry offers a comparison of English and French society throughout history contrasting the aristocratic culture of France prior to the Revolution with the more restrained British society particularly in relation to manners governance and the role of women.Berry is notable for her association with close friend Horace Walpole whose literary collection she her sister and her father inherited. In full morocco bindings with gilt detailing to back strip and blind tooling to board perimeters. Light rubbing to back strip heads and tails and a touch of rubbing to front joint of volume II otherwise externally excellent. Internally firmly bound. Pages exceptionally clean and bright. Minor cover wear and spotting including some visible rubbing mostly at cover corners. Modest damage to fore-edge of several pages in Vol. III. Edited by Lady Theresa Lewis. The first edition was published in 1865. According to the brief "Advrtisement to the Second edition" Lewis had died soon after the first edition was published in 1865 so the task of revision fell to other unnamed individuals. Mary Berry and her younger sister Agnes became great friends of Horace Walpole and lived for many years at Little Strawberry Hill which they inherited after Walpole's death Mary wrote or edited various books the most famous of which was a 2 volume work titled in part "A Comparative View of the Social Life of England and France .".
