1941125419Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd. 1941. Rare lithographic broadside signed by Franklin Delano Roosevelt as the thirty-second President of the United States and Winston S. Churchill as Prime Minster of the United Kingdom at the Atlantic Conference; one of only two known examples of this broadside specially printed at Churchill's direction and signed by both world leaders at their first wartime conference. One page the lithograph features the famed Henry Wadsworth Longfellow verse first used by FDR in a letter of support to Churchill before the United States entered the war and a galleon at sea. The letter sent the day before Roosevelt's third inauguration on January 20 1941 read in full "Dear Churchill Wendell Wilkie will give you this. He is truly helping to keep politics out over here. I think this verse applies to you people as it does to us: "Sail on Oh Ship of State! Sail on Oh Union strong and great. Humanity with all its fears With all the hope of future years Is hanging breathless on thy fate." As ever yours Franklin D. Roosevelt." The historic secret Atlantic Conference was held between August 9th and 12th 1941 on a warship anchored in Placentia Bay Newfoundland. At that momentous meeting the two leaders and their military aides agreed upon critical policies for the conduct of a joint war against Germany even though the U.S. was still officially neutral and would remain so until December 8. The meetings culminated in the Atlantic Charter a declaration of principles issued a few days after the conference. The letter dated June 15th 1951 and addressed to Dean Charles W. Alter Boston University Graduate School reads "Dear Dean Alter I have been accepted in Boston University Graduate School as a regular student and a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of Systematic Theology. I am now interested in finding living accommodations on the campus or at least very near by. A single room would be preferable. If such is possible I would appreciate having it reserved. I am also interested in applying for a graduate Fellowship. Please send me the necessary information at this point along with an application blank. Thanks in advance for your cooperation I am Sincerely yours Martin L. King Jr." King later recalled his experience with housing bias in 1951 Boston in an interview with the Boston Globe in 1965 "I remember very well trying to find a place to live. I went into place after place where there were signs that rooms were for rent. They were for rent until they found out I was a Negro and suddenly they had just been rented." This letter offers an extraordinary glimpse into the education of the great African-American Civil Rights leader exemplifying his own experiences with the systemic racism in 1950s American society. Martin Luther King Jr. first received recognition for his outstanding skills as a public speaker as a student at Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta Georgia. He received early acceptance into the Liberal Arts program at the historically black Morehouse College at the age of 15 also in Atlanta and at age 18 decided to enter the ministry. After graduating from Morehouse in 1948 with a B.A. in Sociology King enrolled in Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester Pennsylvania where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Divinity in 1951. That same year he applied to Graduate School at Boston University where in June of 1955 he received his Ph.D. in Systematic Theology with a dissertation titled A Comparison of the Conceptions of God in the Thinking of Paul Tillich and Henry Nelson Wieman. While pursuing doctoral studies King worked as an assistant minister at Boston's historic Twelfth Baptist Church with Reverend William Hunter Hester a friend of King's father who became an important influence on King's later work. unknown books

First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy became a global fashion icon during her husband's presidency. After the 1960 election she commissioned French-born American fashion designer and Kennedy family friend Oleg Cassini to create an original wardrobe for her appearances as First Lady. From 1961 to 1963 Cassini dressed her in many of her most iconic ensembles including her Inauguration Day fawn coat and Inaugural gala gown as well as many outfits for her visits to Europe India and Pakistan. In 1961 Kennedy spent $45446 more on fashion than the $100000 annual salary her husband earned as president. Roosevelt for his close friends handsomely printed in gothic type with red blue and gold ink textual embellishments. The broadside measures 14 inches by 21 inches printed in black gothic type capital letters and portions of the heading in red and blue ink. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 20.5 inches by 28 inches. A rare and desirable piece of history. On June 6th 1944 while American and Allied troops stormed the beaches at Normandy Roosevelt released the text of a prayer in the afternoon which he then delivered by radio to the nation at 10:00 p.m. Eastern time. It is estimated according to Andrew Malcolm that as many as 100 million people listened to it. "The prayer does not invoke one faith but the appeal to God is bold and unapologetic. The D-Day Prayer was an extraordinary event in U.S. religious history" Malcolm. The D-Day Prayer reads in full: "Last night when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our Allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far. And so in this poignant hour I ask you to join with me in prayer: Almighty God: Our sons pride of our nation this day have set upon a mighty endeavor a struggle to preserve our Republic our religion and our civilization and to set free a suffering humanity. Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms stoutness to their hearts steadfastness in their faith. They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. According to Curtis Roosevelt Anna's son and John's stepson in his memoir Too Close to the Sun: Growing Up in the Shadow of My Grandparents: Franklin and Eleanor in the spring of 1944 "just before the invasion of Normandy Papa F.D.R. had asked Mummy and Popsie to help him write his D-Day message which he intended to broadcast to Americans on the day that tide-turning operation was launched. Also included at the lower left is the original 1945 Christmas card from the President and Mrs. Truman and at lower right the original red white and blue ribbon. These were presented by the President as gifts for friends. Uncommon especially with the original Christmas card and ribbon. Matted and framed which measures 21 inches by 28 inches. "On the day before Hitlers suicide all German troops in Italy laid down their arms. On May 4th German forces in Holland Denmark and northwest Germany surrendered to British Field Marshall Montgomery. On the 6th Donitz authorized General Alfred Jodl to conclude an armistice agreement with General Eisenhower. The Germans wanted a separate peace with the allied troops in the West in order to continue their battle with the Russians in the East. Eisenhower would have none of it. He ordered the Germans to surrender unconditionally the next day. The Germans acquiesced signing the surrender document on May 7th The cessation of fighting took effect at 11:01 P.M. on May 8th" Georges Blond. unknown books

Association copy inscribed by the author to close personal friend Henry Ford and his wife Clara "To Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ford Sincerely Charles A. Lindbergh." Lindbergh developed a long-term friendship with Ford who was well known for his newspaper The Dearborn Independent also known as The Ford International Weekly. The paper reached a circulation of 900000 by 1925 second only to the New York Daily News largely due to a quota system for promotion imposed on Ford dealers. Lawsuits regarding anti-Semitic material published in the paper caused Ford to close it and the last issue was published in December 1927.Lindbergh too gained a reputation as an anti-Semite with the publication of a controversial Reader's Digest article in November 1939 and a series of nationwide radio addresses criticizing the Roosevelt administration for attacking Germany. In late 1940 Lindbergh became spokesman of the non-interventionist America First Committee soon speaking to overflow crowds at Madison Square Garden and Chicago's Soldier Field with millions listening by radio. President Franklin Roosevelt publicly decried Lindbergh's views as those of a "defeatist and appeaser" comparing him to U.S. Rep. Clement L. Vallandigham who had led the "Copperhead" movement that had opposed the American Civil War. Lindbergh promptly resigned his commission as a colonel in the U.S. Army Air Corps writing that he saw "no honorable alternative" given that Roosevelt had publicly questioned his loyalty. In 1927 the year of the present volume's publication Charles Lindbergh flew his Spirit of St. Louis to Ford Airport in Dearborn Michigan. Upon arrival Henry Ford accepted Lindbergh's invitation for a ride. Though Ford had been invested in aviation since 1909 this was his first trip in an airplane. Laid in is a Western Union telegram dated August 15 1947 from Clara Ford to Irving Imoberstag the husband of Clara Ford's niece Frances Imoberstag nee Bryant. Near fine in the original dust jacket which is in very good condition. A remarkable association copy. We is the autobiography of the famous flier Charles A. Lindbergh written almost immediately after his famous flight across the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Paris on May 20-21 1927. This historic flight by Charles Lindbergh took him from being a little known US Postal Service Air Mail pilot and made him into one of the most famous if not the most famous person in the world. The main impetus for the flight was the $25000 Orteig Prize offered by the French-born New York hotelier Raymond Orteig. He offered the prize to be awarded to the pilot of the first successful nonstop flight made in either direction between New York City and Paris. The book which was also soon translated into most major languages remained at the top of best-seller lists well into 1928 with more than 650000 copies sold in the first year and earned Lindbergh more than $250000. The book's great commercial success was considerably aided by its publication coinciding with the start of his three-month tour of the United States in the Spirit on behalf of the Daniel Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of Aeronautics. The nation became obsessed with Lindbergh during the tour in which he was seen in person by more than 30 million Americans a quarter of the nation's then population. No other author before or since ever had such an extensive highly publicized tour that helped promote a book than did Lindbergh's "We" of himself and the Spirit during their 22350-mile tour of the US. 19631098221963. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan is the second studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan released on May 27 1963 by Columbia Records boldly signed by Dylan. Whereas his self-titled debut album Bob Dylan had contained only two original songs Freewheelin<span class="nowrap">'</span> represented the beginning of Dylan's writing contemporary words to traditional melodies. Eleven of the thirteen songs on the album are Dylan's original compositions. The album opens with "Blowin' in the Wind" which became an anthem of the 1960s and an international hit for folk trio Peter Paul & Mary soon after the release of Freewheelin<span class="nowrap">'</span>. The album featured several other songs which came to be regarded as among Dylan's best compositions and classics of the 1960s folk scene: "Girl from the North Country" "Masters of War" "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall" and "Don't Think Twice It's All Right". In 1939 Kennedy toured Europe the Soviet Union the Balkans and the Middle East in preparation for his Harvard senior honors thesis. He then toured Berlin where he became involved for the first time in U.S. diplomacy at the outbreak of WWII. Kennedy developed an interest in political philosophy as an upperclassman at Harvard and in 1940 completed his thesis "Appeasement in Munich" regarding the efficacy of British negotiations during the Munich Agreement. The thesis would go on to become a bestseller under the title Why England Slept. In addition to addressing Britain's unwillingness to strengthen its military in the lead-up to World War II the book also called for an Anglo-American alliance against the rising totalitarian powers.
