Born in Methuen Massachusetts Josesph Hall moved to Camden Maine in 1809 and engaged in mercantile pursuits. In 1814 during the War of 1812 he served as ensign in Colonel Forte's regiment Massachusetts Militia and was subsequently appointed colonel. He was appointed deputy sheriff in 1821 became sheriff in 1827 and was appointed postmaster of Camden 1830-1833. He was elected as a Jacksonian Democrat to the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Congresses March 4 1833 - March 3 1837 and was chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in the Navy Department in both congresses. American statesman John Hanson was elected to the Continental Congress in 1779 after serving for several years in the Maryland General Assembly and Maryland House of Delegates. When relations between Great Britain and the colonies became a crisis in 1774 Hanson became one of Frederick County's leading Patriots. Responsible for recruiting and arming soldiers Hanson proved to be an excellent organizer and Frederick County sent the first southern troops to join George Washington's army. Because funds were scarce Hanson frequently paid soldiers and others with his own money. In December 1779 the House of Delegates named Hanson as a delegate to the Second Continental Congress and signed the Articles of Confederation on behalf of Maryland on March 1 1781. On November 5 1781 Congress elected Hanson as its president. The 12th Vice President United States Millard Fillmore was elevated to the presidency in 1850 by the death of President Zachary Taylor. Born into relative poverty in upstate New York he became a prominent lawyer and politician in the Buffalo area and a Whig as the party formed in the 1830s in opposition to the policies of Andrew Jackson. During the American Civil War Fillmore was critical of Lincoln's war policies and openly denounced secession asserting that the Union must be maintained by force if necessary. As President he was instrumental in passing the Compromise of 1850 which led to a brief truce in the conflict between slave and free states which divided the Union and strengthened the Fugitive Slave Act which provided for the return of slaves who escaped from one state into another territory. Association copy inscribed by John F. Kennedy on the front free endpaper "Dear Jerry Here's coals to Newcastle! Courage to the Courageous! John Kennedy Christmas 1939." In 1939 Kennedy toured Europe the Soviet Union the Balkans and the Middle East in preparation for his Harvard senior honors thesis. He then toured Berlin where he became involved for the first time in U.S. diplomacy at the outbreak of WWII. Kennedy developed an interest in political philosophy as an upperclassman at Harvard and in 1940 completed his thesis "Appeasement in Munich" regarding the efficacy of British negotiations during the Munich Agreement. The thesis would go on to become a bestseller under the title Why England Slept. In addition to addressing Britain's unwillingness to strengthen its military in the lead-up to World War II the book also called for an Anglo-American alliance against the rising totalitarian powers. In 1956 Kennedy published his second major work Profiles in Courage a volume of short biographies describing acts of bravery and integrity by eight United States Senators. 16841208481684. Rare autograph land grant signed by the founder of the Province of Pennsylvania William Penn as the first governor of Pennsylvania. One page script on vellum the document is dated June 4 1684 and grants a tract of land in the county of Philadelphia to one of the earliest Quaker colonists to settle in Philadelphia county John Longworthy. Signed by William Penn at the conclusion of the document. Retaining the paper seal. In very good condition. Rare. In 1677 a group of prominent Quakers that included Penn purchased the colonial province of West Jersey half of the current state of New Jersey and soon East Jersey in 1682. With the New Jersey foothold in place Penn pressed his case to extend the Quaker region. Whether from personal sympathy or political expediency to Penn's surprise the King granted an extraordinarily generous charter which made Penn the world's largest private non-royal landowner with over 45000 square miles. Penn first called the area "New Wales" then "Sylvania" Latin for "forests" or "woods" which King Charles II changed to "Pennsylvania" in honor of the elder Penn. Penn then traveled to America and while there he negotiated Pennsylvania's first land-purchase survey with the Lenape Indian tribe. Penn purchased the first tract of land under a white oak tree at Graystones on July 15 1682 and drawing heavily from John Locke drafted a charter of liberties for the settlement creating a political utopia guaranteeing free and fair trial by jury freedom of religion freedom from unjust imprisonment and free elections. hardcover books
