With 56 folding plates. A scarce work. Not in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France and numerous other great libraries. Contemporary marbled sheep spine in 6 decorated compartments. The work consists of a commentary on the notes and propositions left by Marechal de Saxe. A fine copy as issued of Kerguélen's account of his North Atlantic expedition where he became familiar with sailing in the cold seas first in 1767 with the corvette La Folle following French cod fishermen then the following year with the corvette L'Hirondelle. Hieron is a dialogue by Xenophon between a philosopher Simonides and a king Hieron; through Simonides questions emerges a vision of kingship. As the edition dates from 1711 and Elisabeth Farnese only acceded to royal dignity in 1714 the association of this text with the rare arms of the young and newly crowned queen takes on a distinctly symbolic dimension: a reflection on power and on the way of preparing for it through the reading of the Ancients. Owen Smythe of Condover Park and loosely inserted is the later armorial bookplate of Reginald Cholmondeley of Condover Hall also loosely inserted is a further publishers' catalogue of 16 pages uncut and partially unopened the first page of which is detached; finely bound in full red crushed morocco with ornate gilt decoration on both covers the spine gilt with raised bands and a small black morocco label contained in a custom-made box of marbled paper over boards a red calf spine and cloth lined; the binder is not known but the inked initials "T.A.B. 1974" on the rear endpaper may identify them. From the library of the gardening historian Anthony Huxley with his stamp on the front endpaper. RARE. First published in 1767 the Sir John Soane Library suggests this is probably the third edition of this pattern book although the second could also be possible. First published in English in 1712 under the title A cruising voyage round the world. Illustrated with 2 engraved titles 14 engraved plates and 7 maps including 2 large format Paraguay and Chile - mainland Peru and Brazil and the Land of the Amazons and a world map. Bound in full brown sprinkled calf spine elaborately gilt gilt roulettes on the edges all red speckled edges. Expertly restored corners upper and lower part of joints. Two small restored tears on the world map not affecting the image. Ex-libris in ink ""Sr Remy"" to the upper left margin of the title-page. A tear to the world map not affecting the engraving. The book that brought fame to Alexander Selkirk and inspired the character of Robinson Crusoe. English captain and privateer Woodes Rogers undertook his ""Voyage Around the World"" between 1708 and 1711 at the request of buccaneer William Dampier during the War of the Spanish Succession. This account written on his return narrates the many difficulties encountered by the fleet: desertions mutinies scurvy epidemic. Especially contains the rescue of Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk after being marooned on the island of Más a Tierra in the Juan Fernández archipelago more than six hundred kilometers from the Chilean coast. His ship stopped on this island to resupply with wood and water before returning to England after several failed attacks against Spanish fleet and cities in South America. Selkirk pointed out that the damaged ship needed to be refitted or it would likely sink. The captain refused and left the Scotsman on the deserted island. By the time Selkirk realized the absurdity and danger of his decision to stay there it was too late and the ship had already weighed anchor. Ironically the ship later sunk drowning half the crew. Four years and four months later on February 2 1709 Rogers and his crew landed on the island and met this ""a Man cloth'd in goat skins who look'd wilder than the first owners of them. An engraving in our copy illustrates this chance encounter: ""He had with him his clothes and bedding with a firelock some powder bullets and tobacco a hatchet a knife a kettle a bible some practical pieces and his mathematical instruments and books. He diverted and provided for himself as well as he could; but for the first eight months had much ado to bear up against Melancholy and the Terror of being left alone in such a desolate place. He built two hutts cover'd them with long grass and lin'd them with the skins of soats which he kill'd with his gun as he wanted so long as his powder lasted At his first coming on board us he had so much forgot his language for want of use that we could scarce understand him for he seem'd to speak his words by halves. Captain William Dampier who was there during Selkirk's abandonment encouraged Rogers to hire him as foreman and the unfortunate Scot returned to England with them. Rogers' account was a great popular success mainly thanks to Selkirk's recue story. A close friend of Rogers author Daniel De Foe used this incredible story and extended Robinson's stay on a desert island to twenty-eight years. On offer is an original late 18th Century 'collection' letter from Mr. Elijah Allen a prominent businessman from Hunterdon County New Jersey dated 4/25/1792. It refers to a General Maxwell and money and says in part: "Dear sir General Maxwell has been here & through the multiplicity of business forgot to bring the money to me. Therefore if any of you will go to Greenwich expect you can have the sum mentioned be there ." Signed by Wm Nesbitt for Mr. Elijah Allen. 17760087821776. Near Fine -. 1 handwritten document of 4 pages 39 x 25 cm. folded. On 12 Dec. 1776 William Rowan of Fawn Township York Co. Pa. yeoman mortgaged 245 acres in Fawn Township to Beulah Paschall of the city of Philadelphia spinster for 300 pounds of Pennsylvania due by 12 Dec. 1783 with interest paid yearly. Signed by William Rowan; witnesses Peter Miller and Abraham Shoemaker; Philadelphia Supreme Court Justice Thomas Willing; and York County Recorder Samuel Johnston. Embossed paper stamp of Pennsylvania. The mortgagee was Beulah Paschall 1732-1793 a Philadelphia Quaker and owner of Cedar Grove. Thomas Willing 1731-1821 was a highly successful merchant and real estate developer as well as a Philadelphia Supreme Court Justice from 1767 to 1776. He served as the first president of both the Bank of North America and the Bank of the United States and supported the American Revolution. York County Recorder Samuel Johnston on the other hand had come to York County from England as an official representative of the Penn family. He held a variety of county offices at various times in addition to that of recorder of deeds: clerk of courts prothonotary and register of wills. When he refused to take the oaths of allegiance to Pennsylvania during the Revolution he had to relinquish all public offices. However he did not opposed the Revolution. Two of his sons-in-law served as colonels in the American militia and two of his sons were privates. By 1786 Johnston lived in Maryland and was admitted as an attorny in Baltimore County. 17500001563Good. 1750. On offer is an absolutely sensational ancient original 1750s manuscript sailor's vade mecum or reference manual handwritten by and or for a mariner over 260 years ago. The name William Wine appears on the rear inside cover dated March 4th 1788. The handwriting is similar throughout to the signature but it is inconclusive if Mr. Wine is the author original owner or a later owner. The first page detached but present is dated November 1750. There are many many tables of information illustrations charts drawings etc. that are indexed and with over 420 pages written in a small meticulous hand there are within these pages everything that a mid-18th Century senior officer or mate would require being filled with geographical mathematical financial navigational and geometric information and there are also sections detailing carpenter's work joiners painters glaziers lavers masons plus foreign exchange and monetary info and conversions in foreign countries. There are sections for algebra calculus trigonometry all manners of measurement whether liquid or dry and even how to calculate the contents of a globe with many of the mathematical sections deal with measuring heights and distance from afar measuring and surveying dealing with casks all information that a Lieutenant 1st mate or Ship's Master or even a Captain would need. We conclude that the information and the quality of the manuscript book vellum which double folds and creates an envelope that would protect the pages from the elements plus a metal clasp broken give further credence that this book was owned by a senior officer and most certainly of English origin as evidenced by the section regarding Oxford and Cambridge terms plus a chart that helps one establish the dates of the Easter season leap years tides . The volume begins with a few pages of indices and in the first section one finds pages of geographical place names and distances from one to another: "the coast of Carolina Virginia etc. to Newfoundland" and the "Bohema Islands" and another "The Coast of y.e main Continent in y.e West Indies" and the degrees of longitude and latitude are listed alongside each listed place. The standard depth and sheer volume of information also leads us to conclude that the seaman was likely an officer of a merchantman as opposed to a casual traveler. This is an absolutely unique manuscript relic of ancient seafaring and the age of sail. The 7 x 4.5 x 1.5 inch book is generally soiled on the covers but the interiors are good save for the loose page and the odd stains to the inner pages.
